I have a ton of Christmas fabrics...need suggestions on what to make

I have a ton of Christmas fabrics that I've collected over time and want to do something with them now...I'm looking for suggestions for quick and easy projects or quilt patterns so I can reduce my stash of the Holiday themed fabrics. Suggestions?

I used Christmas fabrics in a Smith Street machine applique pattern (quilt) mixed the Christmas with Oriental prints - turned out beautiful. Nancy Halvorson has a new book every year with Christmas ideas - from small to large. Her books include stockings, table runners, towels, and much more.

I have this all done except for the swag borders and some nagging little 9 patches! The boxes are pieced (fast) and the bows are fused (fast!).

Pillow cases (kids love them made from Christmas fabric), throw pillows, tote bags, pot holders, place mats, mug rugs, and of course quilts. You could also make gift bags.

Here are several patterns: http://www.favequilts.com/Christmas-Projects
and a search on Pinterest gives a 'truckload ' LOL of inspiration, lots also with links to free patterns

Have fun!

Table runners, gift bags for wonky-shaped gifts that don't wrap easily, tea towel embellishers.

Elisabrat 09-23-2013 06:58 AM

I made my kids each a Christmas quilt this year. Also table toppers, runners, cloths (now that is easy exemplified) and talbe mats for each person a variety of prints easy presto. say nine patches or such.. then there are aprons I love aprons myself. wall hangings, even just a bunch of say 3.5" squares would make such a colorful and pretty thing to enjoy when you walk by. you failed to mention is it tons of yardage or is it tons of fqs? I collect Christmas fabric. Another option is to sell it right here on the quilting board the fabrics your not as fond of as when you first bought them. one mans junk is another mans treasure thing :) I have a patchwork quilt random blocks made out of red/white and green Christmas fabrics only that I am working on. We had a quilt a long in the block of the month section where you did two blocks a week that the group decided on.. I was working with that with my blocks. used up a ton of Christmas scraps :) one can never ever have to much Christmas fabric btw.

Elisabrat 09-23-2013 06:58 AM

ps I have sign ups coming up Oct 1st for a brand new Christmas table runner swap. would use up a bit of that fabric rather nicely too. quick easy fun.. you should join us!

QuiltnNan 09-23-2013 07:49 AM

use them to make a wall hanging with pockets for a countdown to the holidays

It seemed like I had a million 10" Raggedy Ann and Santa precision cut squares from Daisy Kingdom so I combined them with 2.5" strips for 9 patches. Cut the work in half and were really cute...did a bunch for charity and family. Still have some lurking around somewhere.

I made a Christmas tablecloth to go on my round dining table, also a runner for a buffet.

DonnaPBradshaw 09-23-2013 10:34 AM

I've made the "ten minute tablerunner" which took me 1/2 an hour but it's really easy and could be a great gift!.

cstucke_1 09-24-2013 02:42 AM

If you have a lot of green. I saw a really cute wall hanging Christmas tree.
looked like it would be easy to do.

Love this idea for Christmas gifts this year for family members and I have plenty of time to get them done

koko 09-24-2013 04:12 AM

Great ideas - thank you. Can't wait to get started on several of these projects so I can delete some stash. Without a doubt this board is the best sharing community that I know!

I used up BOXES of Christmas fabric to make Christmas Stockings for our Deployed Troops. Simple, one layer of fabric on the back and front, with or without a cuff -all are OK. FMI: http://www.operationcarepackages.org

See info, below:

Any type of material is fine. As are embellishments or plain. I would just ask that you keep in mind we send to thousands more men than women and usually do not have near enough for men.

Crazy Quilt style is fine too! Thank you so much for your continued support.

What a wonderful idea!

Another gift idea for the ladies and maybe teens, make them a simple Christmas Vest. Patterns have more than one size printed on them...and vests don't need to fit perfectly.

If you want to make quilts and have larger prints MSQC has fast and easy quilt patterns. My absolute favorite is the Double Slice Layer Cake. It works well with larger print fabrics. Quilts go together in no time. It sounds like now you have lots of great ideas. Can't wait to see your projects!

BettyGee 09-24-2013 06:09 AM

Me too and I've picked a great bunch of runners and toppers to make for gifts. Also am making two tree skirts. Plan on doing many stockings for the new members of our family. I have started on my Christmas sewing, a new plan for me as I usually wait until November and then end up sewing like a nut. I also picked up some tea towels on sale at Missouri Star Quilt and will fussy cut some and applique them to the towels. Whatever you decide, have fun as that is what quilting is supposed to be.

Gift bags or pillowcases for children's hospitals at Christmas time.

The easiest and fastest quilt top I ever made was a take off of the jelly roll race...I cut 3 inch strips from Christmas stash fabrics......random lengths....and sewed them end to end using a 45 degree seam....the more 3 inch strips that you sew together, the larger the quilt top....when you think you have done enough, sew some more....then bring the first strip that you started with and lay it right sides together with the last strip....stitch...boring, now you have a double strip.....bring the end up again and with right sides together, stitch together. Less boring this time because it is shorter...repeat the process until it is a proper looking size...a large quilt top can be made in less than a day...there are better directions from others, but this may give you inspiration...I'll look for a picture to post....

Go to the Moda website. I just found a treasure of free patterns for Christmas items including some fantastic coasters.

BettyGee 09-24-2013 07:09 AM

The address for the free Moda pattern is www.sew4home.com. Check under the table linens heading to start, bet you'll find a ton of projects that you will like.

My DM is making candle mats from my fabrics. Simple circle with yoyos around the perimeter. If you pull it up around a small candle and using rubberband hidden in yoyos is very pretty or lay it flat for more surface area. Keeps her busy from adding to my bucket list! She sews/embroiders but doesn't quilt.

I make gift bags. Instead of wrapping paper I use fabric. I am so tried of throwing out paper. I reuse for next year. Thinking of making one bag for each person instead of each gift. Then as I buy things all year I just put them in their bag. I must be getting old. Then the children can take out one gift at a time.

Iraxy 09-25-2013 08:20 AM

Sudoku (?sp) uses up 9 fabrics. Plus 2-3 more for lattice and borders.

I just saw the snake river quilt pattern on this board and it really would be gorgeous done in Christmas patterns.

Thank you for posting! I shared this with some of my GS friends. I will check my stash this weekend and whip up a few :)

I made a fireside snuggler with some of my Christmas fabric. It was beautiful. The fabric was a piece I had for a couple of years and could not make myself cut in to small pieces. With this pattern I was able to keep my favorite fabric in a larger piece in the center of the quilt.

Is there a pattern or picture somewhere for fireside snuggler?

A woman after my own heart. I have a 30 gallon tub full of Christmas/Yule fabrics. I took my fabric out and draped it all around me one Saturday morning and spent the day going through patterns that I could use to make quilt tops. I will be making one reversible bed quilt (christmas snowballs on one side, winter themed alternating blue and white snowballs on the other). Then, several lap quilts, all of which will be tied because everybody wants flannel on the back. I will also be making a couple of large tote bags (to hold my quilting supplies for class) and a duffle bag for my cousin (she wanted christmas fabric and plans to use it year round). Don't forget festive pillowcases.

Below are the photos for making a reversible bag. Unfortunately, while I can find photos and pattern, I can't find the instructions for assembly.

After you decide which great idea to use, put aside some of your favorite fabrics. Next time you want to test a pattern, do it in Christmas fabric. Before you know it, you'll have enough squares to make a sampler quilt or throw. You can do this is any group of fabrics that you like but don't know what pattern to use.

nightquilter 09-26-2013 08:13 PM

I can not find the pattern on line anywhere.I saw a quilt and the store owner let me draw the pattern. If you are interested and cant find it. I will find my pattern if you will pm me.

Lately I'm a big fan of half square triangles. Make a ton of them (for a really fast oroject make HSTs that finish to 8 inches or so) and just start playing around on your floor or design wall. You can make awesome patterns just by playing around. Also check out Jenny Doan's you tube tutorial on the disappearing 9 patch quilt and the big star quilt. They both look fast and easy. The big star quilt makes a 25" block that could easily become a wall hanging or table topper with just a border or two. Happy sewing!

Make gift bags! I've always hated wrapping presents and resented the waste of paper, ribbon, etc. About 10 years ago, I bought lots of Christmas fabrics and turned them into many simple cloth bags, using shoe laces and sweatshirt strings to close them. My bags were simple, but you could make one or both sides as complicated as you wish. Might be a fun way to try out different block patterns. (Hmmm, I'm inspiring myself now! I've yet to make bags for birthday gifts so maybe I'll take my own advice.) Anyway, my family is every bit as happy with these bags as they were with wrapping paper, and I breathe a huge sigh of relief every Christmas!
