#1 for me would be a good pair of scissors and a seam ripper, then cutting board, 6 x 24 inch ruler and rotary cutter. :)

I found the ruler holder when cutting at RiteAid drug store in the medical assitance supplys. It's for use in the bath or shower but the suction cups hold better than the one from the fabric store. It works wonders with the 5"X24" rulers.

Great input from the others. How about bringing your aunt with you? She can guide you with your purchases, and enjoy a day out with her quilting student. I know I would enjoy shopping with someone new to quilting too.

When buying rulers find ones that are easy for you to read. I like the clear ones as now I do not like the omni grids because I have trouble reading them with the yellow as I get older so switching out to all clear rulers

I originally bought a ruler with black markings. Later I needed one that had some angles marked on it, the first one didn't have. The second one has yellow markings. I find I use the second one way more often than the first with black. Try them both out against fabrics, to see if you prefer one over the other. I use flower head pins most of the time. They have a thinner pin and help with accuracy when pinning blocks together. A walking foot and a 1/4" foot for your machine are a must, I think. As others have mentioned, you can always buy more notions along your quilt making journey, when sales happen and you find you need other items.

I prefer the long rulers that are 6 1/2" wide. Quilters Rule is good because it has sort of ridges on the bottom to kind of hold that fabric.......just my preference.....

My suggestion would be a rotary cutter, the largest mat you can afford, 12 x 6 ruler, seam ripper, small thread scissors (I very seldom use my large ones) and several spools of thread in neutral colors. Also extra needles for your sewing machine and maybe some hand sewing needles and a thimble. Almost forgot the pins. I like long, thin ones.

And extra bobbins...tape measure, tweezers,

I like 120" tape measure, comes in handier then the small ones. And you can use the flat flower head pins to make notes on, like a "U" for up for a "R" for right. Extra machine needles are great. I have switched to use only Topstitch and if you can get some different sizes, I use 14 and 16 sometimes as well as the smaller needles.

Your rulers should be all the same brand. Enjoy!

I would also include at least a 12 1/2 " square ruler, or bigger if you can get it. I do have a few smaller ones, but never use them. All the smaller block sizes are on the bigger one so the extra rulers are a waste to me. Out of all I have, I only use the 12 1/2 square & my 6x24' rulers for all my projects.
