When I travel and purchase souveniers, fabric, etc, I always take it to the nearest shipping store and send it home in a package to myself. MUCH cheaper to do it that way, than to try to take it home on the plane. And less hassle getting the extra luggae off the carousel, and then getting to the car and finding out that extra suitcase obscures your view while driving. Voice of experience, believe me.

I love M & L and the sister store Jenny's Fabric. Awesome assortment. I am glad I live close but not too close.

This group is the best. If there is EVER any need for justification of buying MORE fabric, how to get it home, how to hide it from hubby, how to fit it into the budget, how to squeeze it into our "already too much" stash or whatever, there are lots of hints and ideas on how to do just that. Thanks for brightening my day most days.

WOW! M&L! I used to live in So Cal. My mom and I would make a day out of going there. We used to say that we wouldn't want to be there during an earthquake. We finally decided it wouldn't be a bad way to go - buried under mounds of fabric!

You could leave some items at your daughter for a later visit. You know you will return. Then next time you know to bring a empty suitcase, for you shopping or maybe to bring some different clothes and bring what you left home. Sounds good to me.

OMG - Disney Land and a great fabric shop on the same road? One of these days, I just have to get to California. We tend to travel where our kids live - Savannah, Massachusetts, Kansas, Texas, for a while Seattle area. Nobody ever moved to Cali. Darn.

Knowmthere are lots of quilt stores in LA and I've been to lots of them but not sure where and exactly what M&L is.

quiltlin 03-11-2013 05:35 AM

lo, forgot to add, A large flat-rate box is only $10-$15 as long as it doesn't weigh more than 70 lbs.

Joyce: Your idea would sure explain the way some people in the airport are dressed.

Tink's Mom 03-11-2013 05:50 AM

I always travel with a Priority Mail Flat Rate box...
Took it with me to Vegas this past January...stuffed it full and shipped it the day before I was leaving. It came home the day after I got home....what fun going thru it again.

When I read this I had visions of planes leaving Houston after Quilt Festival with streamers of fabric tied to the tails - What a glorious sight that would be!

LOL! leave your clothes

Cat18 03-11-2013 08:29 AM

Do you have a vacuum cleaner handy? I take Space Bags along when I fly so I can squeeze the maximum into my suitcase when I return!

OK - I'm hooked. Where in LA area in M & L? I visit a friend in Seal Beach at least once a year, and I simply must visit this fabulous store you are talking about!

Whoops - I read on and found the adress - not far from Seal Beach! I'll pack a suitcase in a suitcase!

MimiBug123 03-11-2013 09:50 AM

So jealous! Isn't fabric addictive? You can always use some for wrap skirts, fold it over a few times and make belts, shawls, hats...and the list goes on!

I used to live a 1/2 mile from Disneyland and therefore not far from M&L fabrics. I'm glad to know that they are still in business. I wasn't a quilter yet in 1983, but a seamstress. I bought the majority of my clothing fabrics there.

Oh, WOW, roll the clothes that you need to take home with you and fill the rest of your bags with fabric, I will be in LA in a couple of weeks, so I will need to look that store up, sounds like you had a great visit, have a safe flight home

mountain deb 03-11-2013 09:34 PM

Fabric buying is ingrained in us, more in some than others, BECAUSE historically we have always bought fabric to make things at home. So we are just keeping up tradition and reenacting what our ancestors have always done. There, does every one like that reason? lol

Have a great vacation. Years ago when you didn't have to pay for your luggage I took an empty suitcase, but that sure has changed.

quiltsRfun 03-11-2013 09:56 PM

I found a tote bag folded up in one of the pockets of my suitcase and the fabric fit perfectly. That's probably why I put it there in the first place, although I'd forgotten about it. My suitcase was checked and I was able to carry the bag with me. Home safe and sound, including fabric and all my clothes. :)
