I need to get busy. I have 25 fat quarters of a assorted baby blues in cotton. I also have lots of pink material in different lengths. I would appreciated any ideas on how to use them to best advantage. I am making a baby quilt, of course, but do you have any other suggestions for baby quilted items? The baby is due June 2, which seems like a lot of time, unless you know me

Congratulations!!!!! Being a grandma is loads funner than being a mom. I have four grandchildren and they are the most wonderful blessings. No matter what I make for them, they love it. The goofy thing I've made that their moms loved best was - burp rags. I made 16 inch squares out of flannel and sewed them together, then put a big x on them to keep them from bunching up in the wash. They made such a fuss over them and it was really like making rice krispie treats.....easy...easy hahaha. Take care and have fun.

The newest block of the month would look cute in blues and pinks. It would be a matter of just stitching as many blocks as you want the quilt to be big. Of course, there are always darling applique patterns like ducks and teddy bears and such. They could be done on pink and blue background fabrics.
Congratulations and be sure to let us know what you have decided on.

The burp cloths are a great idea. I happen to have lots of flannel too lol Thanks!

Congrats Danna.. There is nothing better than being a grandma :-D

The first baby quilt I did for my GD was a pink, blue and yellow 9 patch.. I made it crib size and used flannel as the backing..That was the one she used to come home from the hospital in.. I also did one called Baby Magic from Joanne's Crafts.. I did it in the pink, blue and yellow.. The link is below...

Hi Danna:
How fun to have a new grandbaby on the way...our youngest Grand is 12 years old! We told our 6 kids it was time for one or two of them to whip up a couple more for us and we were told "Whip up your own! We're through!" Our first great-grand is due in Dec. so we'll still have babies to burp.

I've made lots of burp cloths, too. I use Flannel on the back and a piece of soft terry cloth on the side the baby's face will be. The Terry cloth keeps the liquid on the cloth because of the loops in the weave. The flannel is nice but sometimes it's slick or flat surface acts as a "slider" for the liquid. I make the cloths 7 inches wide by 18-20 inches long. I also make FULL BODY bibs for babies who can sit in the highchair and "feed" themselves. The pattern is one I bought at a quilt show about 10 years ago. The white tabs you see in the picture go around the leg/ankle of the baby to hold the bib in place. It's affixed with velcro. As you can tell, this one pictured has had LOTS of use and is about shot but it still keeps the baby clean when used.

Enjoy your new one when it comes.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

It's WONDERFUL to be a grandma!!! I only have one little girl so far. She came as a bonus when my son married her mother last winter, and we just love her so much!!

danna738 10-23-2007 11:09 AM

The full body bibs are a great idea. I hadn't seen these before. Wish they had been around when my sons were little. We just changed clothes.

I am looking for ideas or a patterns for a quilted diaper bag. One with a place for everything. I have seen some beautiful rag purses in pictures here. Thanks for all of your help. I am so excited, not that you could tell...

Diamonds, love the Baby Magic Pattern. Perfect if you don't know if it will be a boy or girl.

Congratulations Grandma To Be! :D I like to call it being in the "grandmotherly way" Nothing better than being a grandparent, I love ALL the benefits that go with it! :D The card trick block would be cute, as well as Diamonds suggestions, maybe you will have time to make more than one as Loretta suggested? A matching small one for the crib sized one for a dolly or teddy bear?

Love the body bib! I will be making one of those for my 2yr old gs, he still loves to wear as much as he eats  Maybe even bigger ones for the older grands to wear when they paint.... hmmmm

Congrats on the Grandbaby, Being a Grandparent is great :P , You get to do all the fun stuff that you couldn't do with your own. I don't worry about spoiling my Grandson, after all that's what his Grandma is for

Congatulations!!!! You're gonna love being a grandma, one thing that I wish I would have made for my little grandaughter (especially now that she's walking) are alot of the boo boo bunnies and bears. I use to have the pattern when her mommy was little, but couldn't find it again. They basically are a soft cloth, terry or flannel, wrapped around one of those plastic easter eggs that you put an ice cube in when ouchies happen, then tied into the shape of a bunny or bear with ribbon. The ears on the bunny are to wipe away the tears and the bunny belly is to make the boo boo better.

Congradulations on becoming a Grandma. You will love it. I have three granddaughters and I love every moment of them. Does your new mom have any kind of theme for the nursery? I kept the quilt simple because it will get washed alot!!!

Feathers 10-23-2007 05:52 PM

I love the boo boo bunny...never heard it before but I bet they chased away alot of the boo boos. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations!

I agree with keeping it simple. Anything "really" nice and the parents may be afraid to use it!

My mom did bibs too, though not the full body kind, and I understand that that was the most appreciated gift my sister and SIL got.

PamH 10-23-2007 06:23 PM

Congrats on becoming a grandma.
Nothing better than holding a warm snuggley baby in your arms.

I made my granddaughters flannel and chenille quilts. That wash up great. Six inch blocks, alternating flannel and chenille, no batting, just fleece for the backing.
My daughters loved them!!!!

Congrats, Congrats. Be prepared to really have your heart stolen away. There is nothing that compares to being a NaNa. You will never in your life ever experience anything sweeter then a granbaby. The closest we come to angels on earth is our granbabies. And unless your lucky enough to experience it, you have no idea what it's all about. Because I sure did'nt untill I became one, 3 x's now and I'm still very gou gou ga ga, over my granbabies. I never stop making them things, and spolin them ALL the time. And they love you back ever so sweetley.
