Sure you can do it! My grandmother always told me that "can't died before he tried," so give it a shot. That looks like a great pattern for a beginner. FMQ it or stitch in the ditch, but try! You will be surprised at how gorgeous it will turn out and how happy your DD will be using it-simply because you made it just for her.

Congratulations on learning to sew. You will get frustrated from time to time and when you do just walk away, take some deep breaths, go for a walk or just have a glass of wine and then come back and pick up where you were, re-read the directions and try again. It really is easy to do if you just take it in small steps. Your first quilt will be an adventure and the pattern you have chosen is a good one. Get the top done and then come back for more advice unless you have some friends (besides us) that are able to help you out or a LQS that is willing to advise you. The most important thing is to have FUN. Best of luck to you and be sure to post photos as you go along.
