I took a class in Foundation Piecing today and finally learned how to do it. I can't believe how easy and accurate it is.
I made a Winter Wreath Placemat with it and fully finished the top of one and got a decent start on the second. I had originally signed up for the class in 2006 and DH got called out of town at the last minute so I lost my childcare and was finally able to arrange childcare on the same day as the class is offered for today. I have downloaded a paper pieced pattern for Storm at Sea and want to make a queen sized one for my sister. So excited and just wanted to share that I learned a new quilting skill today! Tara |

I found the paper piece pattern for Storm at Sea at Quilterscache. It looks so easy and accurate to do know that I know how to paper piece. And paper piecing is not hard at all once you get your head around it. With an instructor I got it in no time.
As for pictures, here is a picture of the one placemat top that I finished. Tara |
Good for you!! I want to learn this technique. I'll just add it to the list!!

I got the pattern at my LQS where I took the course. It was the "assigned" pattern.
It was remarkably easy to do I found once I got the knack of it. The only tricky part the six of us in the course found was to remember the direction to place the fabric because you are kind of working backward. Thing is though, I took that picture by putting the top down on my deck. The boards you can see are regular (although rounded) 2x4s so you can see that the wreath is relatively small. Not being terribly experienced myself, I never would have been able to get it so accurate with such small pieces with my other way of piecing. Now I just have to get the other three completed and I am going to give them to my MIL for Christmas. Tara This is the pattern we used and I used Carol Doaks (I think it is) foundation paper. Also, in case it matters, I am not "related" to any of this so get nothing financially from any of it. This is just what I used for anyone who is interested. |
