I love fabric shopping!

I am hoping DH will let me buy some fabric soon because I have enough picked out for 3 quilts and 2 receiving blankets while still have some leftover for my stash. It is under the limit he set. This is for maybe starting to sell some to 2 of my friends that have businesses and want some quilts and blankets.

I am shopping at MSCO and though I would like to go to JoAnn's too, MSCO has some good prices on yardage, most less than $10 on name brand so I just can't bring myself to go to JoAnn's and spend almost the same on a little lower quaility. What would you do?

Raggiemom 05-02-2012 05:23 AM

I'd buy the better quality fabric, especially if you're going to sell. have fun shopping.

That is what I am thinking also. Plus I love the designs of the higher quality fabric....mainly the Berenstain Bears. lol I want to make ME a quilt with it.

Have fun shoping!!!

When in doubt, quality should be the deciding factor. You can't go wrong with quality.

Thanks! I wish I could buy it all. lol Too many great designs to chose from.

I have 7 charm packs (patterns in mind for them), 1 Jelly Roll, and 13 yards of fabric picked out, all for under $200! Highest yardage is $9.95, the jelly roll is the highest but I have idea for it too.

sandybeach 05-02-2012 06:43 AM

Have you tried this site: http://www.quiltshops.com/ Since you already know what fabric you want. Just type in the name of the pattern plus the word SALE, and it will give you all the sites that have that fabric on sale at this moment. I never pay full price for my fabric. Granted there are also some sites out there like:
http://www.5bucksayard.com/
http://www.fabric4less.com/
http://www.fabricdepot.com/
http://www.quiltfabriccloseouts.com/
http://www.thousandsofbolts.com/
that are not at QuiltShops that have good prices also. So shop around and get your money's worth.

If y'all are on a strict budget, I'd firm up the selling offer, then buy fabric for and make those (or buy for one at a time, until that one is sold). Then I'd take my profits and buy the rest.

tngal22 05-02-2012 09:42 AM

Not a strict budget, we just discuss purchases over $100 before we buy. And thanks sandybeach for the link, I will check it out.

buslady 05-02-2012 09:46 AM

Most of all........HAVE FUN!!!

tngal22 05-02-2012 10:00 AM

I will. I have so enjoyed starting from just a piece of fabric and turning it into a quilt, a purse, a skirt, a pillow, and even some pants for my DD. I know it isn't perfect but I enjoy doing it.

DH and I discuss some purchases but I usually veto his no. LOL.

tngal22 05-02-2012 11:29 AM

lol...I usually win in the end but at least I can say I asked. lol

luvTooQuilt 05-02-2012 01:53 PM

I dont mention if its under $400 cash or debit, the purchase is at my discretion.. However, anything that requires me to use the Amex I have to bring to his attention.. Hate for him to be shocked when the bill comes in at the end of the month.. lol..

But I do look for bargains and sales.. that just means I can double my take home stash!!!

babyboomerquilter 05-02-2012 02:10 PM

I would go for the quality of the fabric. I would not like to spend my money then to find out the quality of the fabric is poop.

Sorry about that, slip of my finger on the computer. I meant to say the quality of the fabric is poor. lol

lynn_z 05-03-2012 11:07 AM

You might want to shop online for better quality prices. Do not buy inferior fabric because you will put in too much work to have a failure in the end. Before debit cards, I used to pay for my fabric with a check and write "groceries" in the register.....we had 3 teenage boys. Or, take it out of my cigarette allowance. I didn't smoke but he did. By the time debit cards arrived, he had figured out that he was losing the battle.

tngal22 05-03-2012 03:37 PM

lol lynn_z, too funny!

I still haven't bought anything since our cat had to go to the vet yesterday for a UTI and 2 more went to for their annual checkup. So in 2 days we spent almost $200 at the vet. But they are worth it.

I keep getting emails about jelly rolls on sale (all over the web!) so look around for the best price!

I'm with you. Unless I will absolutely DIE without it, if it isn't on sale (or at Connecting Threads since their stuff is nice & priced right), it doesn't come home with. Lucky (or unlucky) for me, there have been a ton of sale lately. Just ask my Visa... LOL! Hey, it's my early Mother's Day present to myself!

I like your first choice word for bad quality fabric. LOL

Debbie C 05-03-2012 07:23 PM

BUDGET? What's a budget? And especially when it comes to my quilting - my dh knows better than to set limits on my quilting addiction!! LOL!! I don't set any limits on his tools and toys!

Caswews 05-04-2012 05:18 AM

decisions...decisions ... as bad as choices!! LOL Quality is a good thing when selling items ...

tngal22 05-04-2012 05:25 AM

Little Bit (aka DD) is at the grandparents' for the weekend so I might head to the LQS today to see what they have.

emlee51 05-04-2012 05:35 AM

At least you know what you're going to make from the fabric! My stash is full of 'I just love the fabric' fabric...no idea what I'm going to make from it!!! Have fun shopping!!!

hoppa 05-04-2012 05:36 AM

I'd go for quality since you are going to be selling

What would I do? Me? I'd buy what I needed (or wanted badly) and let hubby eat canned chicken noodle soup for one meal a week.

scrapykate 05-04-2012 06:20 AM

I love thousandofbolts. Have only had one experience where the wrong fabric was sent, but they let me keep it and sent the right one to me. If you know the name of the company, you know the fabric is good quality, at least that is what I have always gone by. Thousands doesn't have the newest lines but their prices are fabulous!!Have fun.

jquilt214 05-04-2012 07:19 AM

Another goodnline site is :http:// www.marshalldrygoods.com they hav a large variety usually.

Rose_P 05-04-2012 08:00 AM

Get a different husband!:o You are making something to sell and he wants to control the supply of stuff you need for it?! Not okay by me.

tngal22 05-04-2012 09:55 AM

Oh he really does not care, so please don't hate on him. Like I said we discuss big purchases but usually in the end, I get what I want. lol

I got some stuff today to work on. :)

nstitches4u 05-05-2012 04:38 PM

Go with the better quality, especially if you plan to sell your quilts.
