I WAS making son a Bargello, but he wants a San Diego Charger Quilt
And - can I find a quilt pattern that is good for a football quilt- NO. I'd like to make a large star (not block of stars) with a center square where I could fussie cut out of the Chargers NFL fabric for center. I have been searching for 3 hrs on the internet. Do any of you have any ideas. Think I'll just keep the Bargello for myself.
I initially thought I could buy a flag or banner using that for the center and working around that. But they are all made out of polyester or vinyl- so that's out. I've searched the Team shop etc. - NaDa. There is really only one fabric - NFL Team Fabric either in cotton or flannel - for the Chargers. The only thing I can think to do is just cut random blocks and sash, and maybe do patch blocks for a variety. That would be really ordinary, but I'm an ordinary quilter. The Bargello really took me out of my comfort zone. LOL So wonderful quilters here, do you have any ideas for me? Oh, and I've never made triangles etc. but I know a star block would require that. If I can find one, I'll just buy a lot of extra fabric to cover errors. Thanks you.. Marcia |
Bear Paw quilt shop (online) carries lots of licensed sports fabrics, you can probably find some {Chargers} fabrics there, that you could possibly cut up/use for appliques, or even create borders to frame

Hi Marsh. I am just north of San Diego and I have seen square pillow that you could use. I would search on Google to see what fabric is out there with the San Diego Charger brand printed on the fabric. You might do an advance search on sports quilt and see if any interesting inspiring quilts are found. I will check at our Wednesday sewing group if there is any SD Charger fabric.

When I Googled San Diego Chargers quilt images, this is all I came up with:

Copy your flag/vinyl/whatever on your computer to a sheet of photo transfer cloth...cheap, easy, and you get what you want....

Since I'm a Seattle Seahawk's fan, this is how I did one for a friend's grandson, who is a young fan. The block, called Christmas Star, I used is from "The Quilt Life" magazine. The quilting on the sides is footballs, helmets in each block, and the Seahawk's logo on the top and bottom border. You can pretty much adapt any block that you like to use team fabric.

Jillmc posted a really cute football quilt with pieced footballs on it. They also provided a link or source for the pattern. You could add the team fabric in the sashing? It was under the title. Touchdown! go Buckeyes

Hi Marcia! I have been wondering how your Bargello was coming. Keeping it for yourself is a good idea....since your son has a new quilt in mind.
I made a Carpenter's Star ... http://www.quiltfrog.com/fourhour.html ....that was pretty easy. It has a center that could be made out of one fabric, like you are describing. That is if you can find fabric that you like for it. Take a look, in case it happens to be what you are looking for. It does have half square triangles, but they are big and the quilt goes together rather quickly. Maybe I can find a picture of mine....might help too. Yup, though you would want to change the center. Look at the pattern, and I think you will find it is pretty do-able. (Ignore my quilt inspector Hot Rod and his mouse toy. I couldn't keep him out of the picture. I kept throwing that mouse to distract him, and he always came back...) You are a good Mom, you know. Dina |
Maybe something like this: http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/...ilt-block.html
Edited to add: A chevron quilt could replicate the look of the electric bolt--maybe even just a chevron border on whatever quilt you choose to make. :) |
Google touchdown quilt pattern. It's available as a download or in quilt shops. It could work nice around whatever center section you made. Footballs!!!

I went to Yahoo and searched for San Diego Chargers Fabric. There were many listing, mostly of the same fabric to choose from. Some tee shirt sites, even a Joann's sale on the cotton fabric.
Just an idea from me....most guys don't really care for a fancy, many pieced quilt if they are going to use it a lot. They really want fairly simple and the ability to hold up under use. Warm Wishes is a great pattern for that. It would be a very easy pattern to change the size of the focus squares so that you could do some fussy cutting. There are free downloads of the pattern on the Internet. This is one I made for a Granddaughter. |
If you want just one big star, here's a tutorial for one that's 48". You can replace the center pinwheel blocks with a 24" square of fabric:

Thank you all so much for your responses re. a football quilt. All of the quilt pictures are beautiful!! Momto5 I have no idea what you suggested means. I'm sure from all these suggestions I will figure out something.

A DP9 would be nice. That way you could mix in the Charger fabric and use Charger colors in different prints. If you put the Charger fabric in the outer corners, you won't cut through the print. Or, Chinese coins. Again mix in regular prints and Charger print. There are lots of patterns you could use.

I make a lot of sports quilts. Start with your Chargers fabric, get some goldish yellow and bright blue, & a little white. Also if you can find some fabric with footballs on or helmets or both you are set. Above suggestions all good. Use a pattern that you can feature Team fabric. An easy way to start is use a FQ as a center medallion. Good Luck. Post photos

PS Use a little bit of pink as she is a Lady Charger fan

thank you. do you have any photos of your quilts?

I made this quilt for my former Rabbi. He is a dyed-in-the-wool Steelers fan, and I really went wild with this. I realize the Chargers don't have the history and accomplishments that the Steelers do, but it was a fun learning experience. I don't have the link to the pattern, but it was easy (a tube pattern) and went together quickly. PM me if you want me to look it up for you and I'll be happy to do so.
On the solid blocks, I machine embroidered team info. For instance, I included info for the six Superbowls the Steelers won, included all the Hall of Fame members, the three recent stadiums they have played in, the Immaculate Reception (of course), the Terrible Towel (as well as a poem about it), lots of factoids. The back was done in Steelers fleece, and I think he liked that almost more than the front of the quilt, which made me want to just SMACK him! |
What a wonder quilt. I bet he loved it. There is only 1 style of cotton fabric for the Chargers- so I don't have much variety to work with. Thank you.

I was looking ay Ebay this morning and came upon this unique San Diego fabric. I didn't even know something like this had ever been sold. http://www.ebay.com/itm/San-Diego-FA...item2a43226717
With football season coming on, it will be a good time to shop for helmet or football fabric at your large fabric shops. Joann's, Hancock, even maybe Hobby Lobby |
Barb- thanks, what interesting fabric.
|
what about using the bargello idea to make a large curved lighting bolt? (My daughter lived in San Diego and I spent a lot of time looking at those helmets). It wouldn't be a true bargello but you could use a variety of blues and golds and just curve them around.
|
This is a very interesting idea. Thank you Klswift :)

We are going to San Diego in a couple of weeks, and I'm going to go to the Team Shop see if they will let me trace the lightening bolt - they have them in vinyl with adhesive backs. I can't think that they would mind if I tell them what I am doing. It would be great in the center of navy blue fabric as a focus and then put blocks around it in their colors alternating with the Chargers fabric. I've also seen bed sheets that have navy pillow cases with the bolt on it, but it's not so big.

If you get a chance go to Rosie's calico cupboard on El Cajon blvd address says San Diego but its pretty much La Mesa the shop has a huge selection and the San Diego fabrics are beautiful. They have 100% cotton and home decore fabrics in it that line. Also I have seen charger fabrics at jo Ann's. Since we are kind of the red headed step children of the football world I'm sure it's only in sandiego stores. |
