I Need Colour and Pattern Choice Help

3 Attachment(s)
I want to make my daughter a quilt for her dorm room. Her university colours are white and purple. Here are 6 fabrics that I am thinking about using for her quilt. I'm looking for assistance as follows: choosing a pattern and the fabrics. Below are three pictures of the 6 fabrics in question. It seems to me that fabrics 1-4 are great together. 5 and 6 may go with the first 4, depending on the pattern.

I was thinking about an Irish Chain, using white as the background. Would all 6 fabrics play nicely together in an Irish Chain? I'm an intermediate level quilter, and I've never made an Irish Chain before. Does anyone know where I can get an Irish Chain pattern that would be good for 4 or 6 fabrics?

Or, does anyone have any links to other patterns that may be good for these fabrics? I need something to do today so I'm hoping everyone has had their morning cup of inspriation!

Just my opinion, but I don't think that the tone of #5&6 isn't quiet right. I wouldn't use them with the others.

My preference is 1-4 going together the best. You did not mention the size you would like to make. I am assuming that since if is going in a dorm, it will twin or smaller. How much yardage do you have of each piece?

I have made a Triple Irish Chain, it only used 3 'focal/color' fabrics and a light.

Here is a link that I found ~ http://www.generations-quilt-pattern...ain-quilt.html

There are single, double and triple Irish Chains so I'm not sure which you are thinking about. Quilt in a Day are excellent books, so if you want to buy a book, that's my recommendation. Irish Chain is a classic and you can find patterns on the internet. Contrast is going to be the key to the success of your quilt. The white with dots would be a cute background fabric. The darker purples would be good for the chain. Just remember that the same value in fabrics will all "blend" together in looking at the quilt once it's made. Hope that helps.

Anna O said it very well.

I've done several double irish chains (all from Quilt in a Day) and I love them. My suggestion would be arrange by value. Darker for center of chain (in the case of 6 maybe choose 2), lighter for the next (again 2) and then the lightest (again 2) as the area between the chains. If you sort this ahead of time you can mix the like value fabrics as you wish.

Call me weird but I like the color combo of 2 - 5. To me, using a lighter color here and there really makes the bold ones like #2 pop out more.

I like the first variation of the pattern grammy Dwynn posted and would use colors 2 - 5 as my choice. With #5 being used the least.

Hard to say without moving them around and playing but I would use this order (next to each other)

#2, #4, #5, and then #3

I just finished my Labrynith quilt and I would love to do it in your purples and a white backgound. oh how it would stand out....
I posted a photo of it...yesterday if you seen it. an easy pattern as well

I want to make this no larger than a double, as I only have about 2 metres of each of fabrics 1-4. I'm thinking 5 and 6 are out. I'm just now searching online for an Irish Chain that uses 4 fabrics plus the backgroud, but they all seem to only use 3 plus the background. I'm open to other patterns as well...

I would probably use 1, 2, and 4 for the dark colors against a white for the light. Leave 3 and 5 for another quilt.

Triple Irish Chain is one of my favorites. I actually completed one: http://www.quiltingboard.com/members...237-292758.JPG

This pattern looks great when you have contrast. For a Double Irish Chain, maybe select one of the purples that you can't live without and find a coordinated white with purple print to match. For Triple, I would suggest adding a non-purple.

If you are sold on using all of the purples, maybe try a Trip Around the World, again adding some contrast with a coordinated white/purple print: http://www.quiltingboard.com/members...237-286473.JPG

Please share when you make your decision and happy quilting! :)
