Hello Everyone
I have been trying to do a set of 4 Placemats for a friend down the road from me. She has fixed me a Christmas Center Piece for the last 2 years. She sells these Center pieces for $35.00 Each but gives them to me. I wanted to fix her something easy and nice. Her colors are Burgandy, green,Earth colors she said. She knows I am a caregiver for my 83 yr.old Mother and that things get pretty rough sometimes for me and she doesn't want me to do anything that takes a lot of time, hench the placmats. So I designed my own placmat with the log cabin pattern. Was doing Great,Got one done and then I looked at it. I have Flowers in the middle and plaid on the side, It looks horrible to me. So now I don't know what to put in the middle I have everything cut out. The simplest thing is to change the middle and use this on as a decoration on my wall of what not to do. Please my brain is kinda mushy can someone give me ideas for the middle. I am going to Hobby Lobby tomorrow so I can get something different. Thank you Guys and Girls ahead of time. Yall always come thru with a great idea. BillsBonBon |
I love it. Mine are very boring compared to yours. Usually I string piece or if I have quilted fabric for a practice I cut that up and bind it.
|
perhaps you could find a white with a pattern of some kind in the weave....white on white?
|
I think it looks pretty good, but if the floral print is bugging you, maybe you could use a strip to co-ordinate with the white/cream colour in the plaid. Therefore keeping the middle plain and just having the plaid as the "busy" bit. Anyway, if someone made these for me I'd be thrilled to bits, especially if they were a caregiver for whom time is precious.
|
The problem I see is the floral is mauve and the plaid and solid are burgandy. You could put them together in something with a lot more fabircs but with just the 5 fabrics the mauve is going to throw the whole color arrangement off. I'd find a floral that is closer in tone to the plaid. Take a piece with you when you go shopping.
|
What if you didn't use the floral. Use the plaid there instead.
|
I would use the plad, ir extend the green and the burgundy into the center.
|
Possibly you might get a very subtle stripe, combining the red and greens.
Very thin strips connecting the plaids of the log cabin.... very clever design, I like it. Good luck, I am sure that she will love them whatever the design or color. mj |
If you want to change it up without a lot of extra work, cut a strip of the plaid and machine appliqué it down the middle of the flora fabric. That will break up the floral and add detail.
|
Or applique a holiday motif - ornaments, tree, stocking, presents, and such
|
I like the idea of some kind of white in that middle to echo the white in the plaid.

Whatever the colors, I love the idea! I would not have thought of doing something like that. Think I will download your picture, if you don't mind, so that I can reference it when I get some free time

After reading all of the posts Pzazz idea work. I love it now. I did rip out the middle floral and put in this white. Didn't do much damage to it. But the White on White I do love it. Thank you Pzazz Here is a picture of the difference. Tried to do 2 but said I had an error. I Thank all of you for your ideas, I looked at each and tried each suggestion that I could use. The White on White just complimented the Plaid. Thanks again BillsBonBon placemat after ripping out the middle. Still don't know how I managed that one. |

There you go, Bonnie. It looks great!
Aren't you glad we have so many quilting buddies to ask? :D |
Clever idea -
What if you used one of the solids in the center and the other one on both sides green burgundy green with plaid on the ends or burgundy green burgundy with plaid on the ends? You said you had the pieces cut, so I would imagine that you want to salvage as much of it as you can. |
You're welcome Bonnie. There were lots of great ideas tossed around here. Glad you were able to find a resolution. And I know they will be a very welcome gift...just because of the love and care that is going into them.

I really like how you changed it. Looks great and it was a good idea.
|
You did a great job with the design BillsBonBon, so any choice you made would have been a good one. I am glad you are happy with your final result because the way you feel about your work is very important. Kind of gives you a warm glow and fuels you up for the next project. I'm sure your friend will be over the moon with such a lovely gift.
