Cut the squares 7 inches and square up the HST to 6.5.

See how you ask a math question and get several answers? LOL

The correct answer, (because I checked it with EQ7), is to cut 2 squares at 5 1/8 inches and slice in half diagonally. That leaves a little wiggle room, not much. This block is much easier to paper piece!

Dunster thank you so much.. I worked it out in EQ5 and your answer agrees with my EQ too. I have NO idea why the calculator in the link above came up with such a different answer. I will ask Patrice to remove the above two posts I made. Thanks so much for catching it Dunster !

Thanks Dunster...that's what I came up with by just kept measuring and I finally got the right size square...all of those sites were way off...

All those sites were way off because you were asking for half square triangles instead of square in a square. They're not the same thing at all. A half square triangle is one square with half one fabric and half the other fabric seamed on the diagonal.
