I had a lady give a me a quilt that is about 1/2 to 2/3 done, she call it a "strip quilt " but I can not find this particular pattern. The backing and batting are cut to length about 2ft wide and then she has sewn 2 1/2 in. strips on the diagonal and part way down a panel, this is done on 2 that are complete and there is 1 1/2 to still finish. What I need is to know how to attach the sections together when strip sections are done???? Also would like to know if I can use drapery fabric squares [they were free] to make a quilt if they are washed prior to use. It is some very petty fabric and I hate to waste it. Thank you for any help on either question.

How thick is the drapery fabric? Is it like upholstery fabric, or the thinner type?

It is thinner fabric.

Absolutely, you can use drapery fabric. Why not? The only thing that limits what fabric you can use is your creativity.

Of course, there are things to be aware of. Is this a machine washable fabric or will it have to be dry cleaned every time?

If it is a sheer fabric, you will need to create a foundation to it for stability.

Is it a rough fabric? If so, you might want to use other fabrics as well to make the quilt more touchable. Such as a combination of silk, velvet and upholstery - my mother had a quilt made out of these fabrics when I was a kid, it is still my favorite.

About the strip quilt....what are the strips sewn to? If just lightweight fabric (muslin, for example), then you would treat it like any other quilt block and either sew them to each other (right sides together) or do sashing, which is a thin strip (2" or less) of fabric sewn between the blocks (sort of like framing). Thank you, this fabric is more like a little heavier cotton, like quilter cotton.No I have not been quilting long I get to more like dabble in it for about 5yrs. but you my DH thinks I am going to cave in the up-stairs. Most of the fabric is fairly soft.I will double check on the cleaning, but planned on washing before using. Thank you.

This is already sewn to the back fabric withe batting,I think it sewn directly to the back, they 20"x 92" very long. I thought I knew about strip quilting til I went to look for the pattern and can not find this one. I am not sure how attach these long strips, there 4 of them, at least she # them.

On the panels, are they quilted all the way to the edges? Or did she leave the edges free?

It is sewn from side to side, top to bottom, as you go. My son is going to help me get a picture this evening and post it for me.

Here are the pictures of the 2 panels that are done, there are 2 more to do. The first one shows the backing in lower corner. I need to know how to put them together once all are complete.

You need to find out what angle she was working in, then draw a line across the batting in that angle , maybe every 10-15" then start placing your strips at that angle, remembering not to sew all the way to the edges(1/2 inch or so). then trim off the left over material that hangs over the edge. You do one that has the highest side on the right, then one that has left side as highest side. Did I sound clear or rambling. I hope I helped.

I actually made one from fabric samples being discarded from a furniture store, it actually turned out beautiful. Wish I still had it or had a pic of it.

The strip quilt is not made from the samples, sorry if there was some confusion about that, it was meant to be two separate ?. pstoner do you have a pattern for this I would appreciate it. This is a very pretty quilt.Attaching the strips is the part I am not sure of, I know I have seen this somewhere, but can not find it anywhere. Thank you everyone for any suggestions.

So does each strip already have the batting and backing attached? So, you are trying to figure out how to atach the large sections together, considering they already have batting and backing?

Yes, they are ready as soon as I get the other 2 strips put together, everything is there and to go.
