To simplify it, you could do the 6" squares, then square up the whole block to the correct size after you rearrange/sew it. I think it would look fine, I don't think it would distort it really if you try to take an even amount off each side. You might want to try one with scraps and see what you think.

i woudn't sweat the math too much but make the d9p larger than needed and then trim it down. Get one as close to the finished size as possible. Even if it doesn't come out exact but cutting consistently will give you the same look.

Sorry for rehashing old topics, I was away on holiday. I still think this is wrong. You first sew an ordinary 9-patch with 6 inch squares resulting in a 17 inch block. I think so far, we agree. You then cut it in four parts, sew them together again, resulting in a 16.5 inch block, finished size (when sewn together) 16 inches.
