I need help

My oldest son has asked for a comforter/spread for their bedroom, This is to replace their original one, as she doesn't want to redo their room. She wants a quilt in tan, figure red, red solid with some navy. I didn't a sample using the Carpenter Star with another block, both measuring 24 inch each. But my problem is how does one piece the Dallas Cowboy Star in the middle of a block? He wants the backing to be gray/silver, I went to JoAnn's and found a really nice piece of blue that has a tint of gray in it. But I NEED the Cowboy Star directions... or I may have to make my own pattern. :(
Does anyone have a pattern or know where I can find a tutorial?
Thank You in advance... Hope you had a Very Merry Christmas and looking forward to the New Year~~~~~

I think applique would be easier. I'd enlarge a picture of it (google images) and use that. You may have to cut it into quarters and enlarge each separately to get the size you want.

Here are some thoughts if you haven't come up with an actual pattern for the star:

If you look at both of these links, you may come up with your solution. The strips going out from the star don't necessarily have to be strips, they could be solid pieces sewn together and then sewn to the star. EQ7 would also be very helpful in creating your own piecing designs. Any size you need. Applique is also another solution.

Thank You for your help. The link was very helpful... I think I will use some of their idea, but will alter it some... Yes it was helpful, I wasn't crazy about doing applique... I haven't done enough of it to be happy with my work. Thanks :)
