I inherited my MIL's stash several years ago. She loved to applique and had several applique projects cut out with maybe one block pinned or one block someone had given her as a pattern. The tulip pattern block (picture below) she had pinned, is 12" x 12", and she had 84 tulip blossoms cut out (42 sets with 2 of each pattern). No stems, but there is a cardboard pattern for the blossom and stem. (I think she wanted to make 14 quilts :?: Has anyone done one before? Does it have leaves or grass or anything at the bottom? It looks awfully plain or top-heavy or like something is missing. Before I start working on it, I would like to see a picture of a quilt or a block if anyone has done one. Thanks for any suggestions.

KyKat that is a lovely pattern. I think you should extend the stems into the seam allowance and ad some leaves. Tulip leaves are long, slim and pointed on the end. I think you could change it around to make it look better by adding some leaves. Thanks for sharing..crafty_linda_b

I keep picturing various colored triangle corners along with longer stems and leaves...plus you could add some free motion embroidery stitches that would enhance and bring each piece "to life". But, sometimes the basic blocks can make the most wonderful quilts. Have fun with whatever you chose and post pictures.

It seems to be missing leaves. If you can see an Eleanor Burns book, you can see what adding leaves does for it.

I think this is probably an old pattern..My computer is down and can't attach a picture but my grandmother and husband's mother have a similar pattern and that is all there was...It is just a pattern of an older era.
Hope this helps...I would not trade anything for the ones my grandmother did. Little did I know that one day I would quilt when she was doing all of that. I have her quilt frame that consists of 2x2 sticks that she sat on ladder back chairs in the living room and hand quilted. A treasure for me.
