I need a "problem solver" for my rag quilt...
In another post, I discussed the strips I've cut for a strip rag quilt. Everything is cut. I have 4 colors of 7 strips each, totaling 28 strips. I cut them 40" long. For each row, I would like to use a 40" strip and a 20" strip and I will alternate each row, i.e., the next row will be 20" then a 40". Can someone figure out a pattern so I don't repeat the color combos? If it doesn't come exactly that I use every single strip, I'm OK with that. Thanks in advance.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, are you making a raggy quilt, where you put together (sandwiches- top batting, backing) sew them together & clip the seams?
Generally made using 1/2" seams or larger for clipping. So, you want to sew a 40" strip & a 20" strip together, making a 59" strip for each row? You can switch ends back & forth, and you can cut 10" off one end & sew it onto the other end to mix it up and so you don't have to worry about any seams lining up... I don't quite know what you mean by a (pattern) ....how wide are your strips? Remember you will lose an inch (1/2" on each side) of finished strip.... If this is what you are planning. If you are doing something totally different I guess I need other information b |

If I understand correctly, you are looking to make a quilt that looks a bit like this:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...d=493339&stc=1 So you have 28 strips of 40 inches available to you. Each row of the quilt will use 1 1/2 strips, therefore you will have 18 rows (using 27 of your strips). I've tried playing around with colours and there isn't really a way to do it without having the same colour combinations, as you only have 4 colours to work with. Here's a blank version of the above picture, if you save it and then open it in paint, you can have a play around with colours yourself :-) http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...d=493340&stc=1 Hope that helped a little bit! |
To Sisty 88: Yes, that's exactly what i needed. Thank you VERY much.

Seaside ... using Sisty's layout you can place them so the same color doesn't touch each other.
Left to right Red / Green Purple / Blue Green / Red Blue / Purple repeat those four rows |
Yay! I'm glad I could help!

For all of my rag quilts and even block quilts I just lay them out and take a picture to see if I like it plus it gives me a reference point if they mixed up, it keeps me on point.

TO: DogHouseMom : I'll give your idea a whirl. Thanks for responding.

I was not sure whether you mean a "rag" quilt or a scrappy quilt. I would be really interested in seeing the rag quilt when it is done as I haven't seen one done with strips. It sure can be done but would be a lot of cutting. Please keep us posted with your progress. Thank you to DogHouseMom for doing the work with the diagrams. Good job.
