I have these fabrics to make a quilt for a friend's daughter. She has given strict instructions that it is to be simple, because her daughter won't appreciate the amount of work in a complicated design.

So I'm thinking simple 12" squares on point, but then I'm stuck.

I have tonnes of the fabrics shown, but only 2 12" squares of the white on black (on the right hand side of the picture).
I'm thinking of making those two black squares a feature, but can't come up with anything that balances.

There's a full yard of each of these, and I can get more, except for the black on the right side, there is only two 12 inch squares of that.

Oh, and the two swirly patterned ones in the middle don't have to be in there, they are out of my stash.

What about Yellow Brick Road or Turning 20? Could use pretty much any fat quarter pattern for it. Pretty easy and quick.

Could try a Take 5 pattern.
They go together quickly easy to do, they look more complicated than they are.
Similar to the turning 20 and ybr.

A Turning 20 quilt would be fast and easy and looks a lot harder than it is!

Or a disappearing 9 patch so you can use up the small squares.

What about the warm wishes using the black and white cats ( the ones on the right and all the way to the left )as the focus squares, alternating . Then you could use the others for the strips, does that sound right ? Just a thought . But let us know what you decide

You could do a Trip around the world.

Try Autumn Tints 2 from Quilterscache.com. It makes up an 8" block, easy to put together and will use 4 different colors. You could do 2" sashings around each block to enhance the blocks themselves!

You guys rock... thank you!

I had a total mental block on this one, serves me right for pushing it to one side and saying it will be easy to "whip up" later! lol

well, you did say simple, but for future reference in case you do one for somebody that will appreciate a bit more work:
I have copied a motif off of fabric before and enlarged it on graph paper. You can then use it to applique with. I do love applique. :D

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... THAT is a good idea!

*files that away for future reference*

;-)

So many good ideas. I just have to say I love a black and white and red quilt. Can't wait to see what you decide.

definitely Yellow Brick Road or Turning Twenty. Your fabrics are really nice. Go for it.

This pattern:

is called "Bodacious" It is real easy and looks complicated. You sew 2 strips on both sides of a contrasting strip and cut out triangles. When the triangles are sewn together, you get the "inset" look. It has layout variations similar to a log cabin.

It can be done with as few as 2 contrasting fabrics. I used 4.

This picture shows the sew lines better:

I kind of think by what you said, that you are wanting to have more of the black background fabric to mix in for your balance you were taking about. Can you find any more of it? I wish I had some I would send it to you.

Thanks dude... I did look for more of the black but it doesn't seem to be available anywhere... even in the states! It would have been nice to have more, but it doesn't matter, it's still going to look awesome.
I must admit, black and white and red is not my kind of colours, lucky it's not for me! lol If it was mine I would add some brights in there, yellow, lime, etc.

what about fence rail - simple as it gets.
