I want a sewing machine that allows me more work space between the needle and the motor. Currently I have a singer simple and have only about 6 inches or so. I checked out the Janome 6600 and love it. However, I would like to know what other brand/model has the space and if you know how much they run please let me know. Thanks.

The 6600 is a great machine, but just remember there is no freearm on that machine. It does have the Acufeed system though (a built in walking foot).

If you have the cash I'd go with the Horizon 7700 it has more throat space than the 6600, 11 inches I think. I love it and it also has the Acufeed system. The Horizon goes for around $2,600.

The Pfaff Quilt Expression 2.0, 3.0 or 4.0 have 10 inches of throat space and IDT, which is the original built in walking foot. I have the 4.0 for $2000. The other two are a less.

BTW, I just noticed your town. I have stayed in the Holiday Inn Express while traveling through that way! :)

Actually in part it will be what I can get the hubby to part with. :) Doing my shopping now so I have time to convince my husband what I want. But I really appreciate your advice.

This really depends on what you want. For the added space and to quilt I got a Viking mega quilter; it only does straight stitch but it is super fast speed and does a great job. I use my other machine for decrative stitches and it's also nice when I have multiple projects going at once I'm not rethreading the machine switching between them.

I got my used Expressions 3.0 for $1000. Love it!

Depending on what you want to do with the machine...if you only need it for straight stitch...then you could consider a brother...I have one that I use for Machine quilting and piecing...it sews really fast, and has I think 9" opening to make it easier to fit a quilt under the machine...model# is Brother PQ1500S ...you should be able to get one for about $800.00 or less.
