Dog Daze pattern. The way it's written, just sew all blocks together and then they put a blue border around it. First, should I add sashing, or do an attic window? Next, opinions on fabric colors would be really helpful, because the blue they used just isn't doing it for me!

Here are a couple of examples , not the same pattern but could be adapted. I really like bright colors for whimisical patterns.

Very, very cute!!!

I would do plain sashing in a yellow, I think. Might be a little too bright, but something like this:

Maybe with a border of dog bones or something similar:

https://www.fabric.com/buy/0314235/k...dog-word-cream

Maybe pick the border fabric first, then a coordinating sashing fabric.

Very cute!! I would sash in black which I think would make the dogs and their features pop. Then do an inside border in black to complete the frame around it. Not needed but if you found a cute puppy paw or dog bone print in browns and black for an outer border would finish it off nicely

This was pretty much my idea too love the paw print idea.

I also think attic windows would be adorable! Your puppies are cute!

terri bb 03-11-2014 07:10 PM

i vote for attic windows and i think a light blue sashing would be really cute but whatever you decide the quilt is going to be darling!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 03-11-2014 07:15 PM

I'm a sucker for attic windows, but sashing would be great, too. I agree that it needs something.

Knitette 03-12-2014 12:08 AM

Adorable! I think Attic Windows too and I also like the idea of a dog-related print for the border. :)

Annie Pearl 03-12-2014 12:27 AM

I vote for sashing. I think blue would look nice

Gay 03-12-2014 01:21 AM

I think your puppies are cute. I would go with the attic windows in black and perhaps soft yellow.

Trisha - Love those photos - maybe they're 'seeing eye dogs'. ROL (why can't I post smileys?)

Cheers

I love the attic window idea. I've never attempted attic windows - still on the bucket list to do. Post a pic when you're finished.

Stevensgirl 03-12-2014 02:45 AM

How cute! What a fun quilt! I agree with everyone else that sashing would be the right touch. I'm thinking a dog bone pattern.

ljptexas 03-12-2014 03:13 AM

I'm not into dogs but those are soooo cute… I vote for attic windows too. It would set each one off… Yellow would be bright too.

yonnikka 03-12-2014 03:28 AM

H'mm Michelleoc, to me your puppies look like a wall hanging. I would "hang" it in the room where it will be shown. The colors in the room will help determine how much to brighten it with borders & sashing. Secondly: how BIG do you want the completed quilt to be? Start with your Outer border, whether you use a very busy print, or a solid, or a neutral. Then you could do a very narrow (half inch wide) framing of each puppy, then determine your sashing, by laying your squares against some solid fabric, and looking at each for a week or so... auditioning the various colors. You may find that the brights are very off-putting, and go with a soft color. And I think one puppy needs a little smile.

You've received wonderful suggestions!

Can't wait to see you decide.

QuiltnNan 03-12-2014 04:36 AM

i would use a dark brown sashing with a border the same size as the sashing. then, if you have more of the small checks, i'd use that for an outside border. i'd bind it in the dark brown

PenniF 03-12-2014 05:39 AM

I agree - sashing.....my first thought was a deep red....and i got the cutest dog paw prints and hearts material at JoAnn's not long ago that you might like.

nanna-up-north 03-12-2014 06:26 AM

Your blocks are adorable and everyone's suggestions are great. I'm not an attic windows fan but do whatever you love. And I love the idea of getting some of that 'paws' fabric for borders. Have fun..... it's going to be a great quilt.

I agree with Jeanne

michelleoc 03-12-2014 07:23 AM

Wow, I knew I could count on you! Well, I love the dog bone, dog words idea, of which I have none. So, I guess I'll "HAVE" to go to the quilt shop (it's a dirty job, but someone has to do it!). Thank you for all of your great ideas!!

Very cute puppies. I like the above suggestion. Would not want to take away from the adorable puppies. Great quilt no matter how you decide to finish it.

The puppies are so darn cute! My first thought was definitely sashing, then I looked at the site with the dogs in the attic windows and that's cute too. I think I like the sashing idea better, they will look like they are in their own little crates. Please post a picture when you are finished, can't wait to see it!

twinkie 03-13-2014 03:19 AM

I like the attic windows idea. Very cute

pmonaghen 03-13-2014 04:35 AM

Attic windows gets my vote...poor puppies have to look at the world from inside the house!LOL!!

Yooper32 03-13-2014 06:54 AM

I think attic windows would be smashing. Something to enhance the doggies but not detract from them. This is going to be the cutest quilt. Hope you are having fun with it.

Realtorlin 03-13-2014 09:14 AM

I am not a dog person but that is just the cutest quilt...!!!! I think black sashing would be nice. Would love to see it finished.

ManiacQuilter2 03-13-2014 12:57 PM

I think that black would make the dogs pop. Try different fabrics and various widths and take a digital picture as you go along. You can then review your pictures and see if there is one that tells you to use it !!

quilter2theend 03-13-2014 01:01 PM

Black attic window and then finish with a paw print fabric, you are doing great so far!

caspharm 03-13-2014 01:37 PM

I think the attic windows approach would be really cute with the dog print border.

Carol34446 03-13-2014 02:46 PM

I agree, I would go with dog bone or paw prints around the dogs, they have it is black with white prints, I think on Fabric.com. Have gotten it at JoAnne's too. And bones print. Adorable quilt, show us when you get it finished. As a dog breeder I am a dog nut anyway.

debbiemarie 03-13-2014 03:08 PM

I love your squares, they are adorable, was this hard? whatever you decide it's going to be cute, I think bright fabric would not blend well, the dog bone or paw prints idea sounds really good.

FroggyinTexas 03-13-2014 05:07 PM

If I had enough sense, which I don't, I would do attic windows and finish it off as jeanne S and Billi suggested. froggyintexas

My opinion is no sashing. All it needs is the border. Sometimes little is more. This is an adorable quilt just the way it is.
