I opened my 1st jelly roll!

I did a "jelly roll race 2" with it and now am trying to figure out a nice way to home machine quilt it. In the small white blocks I was thinking of a putting the letter "S" and give it to brother and his new bride, for the last name. And a S is right side up either direction.
Any thought of how to quilt it....toss them my direction. I'm somewhat new at machine quilting, but can be up for a challenge! Hmmm I can't seem to attach a photo from my phone. Will do that on the computer then.

Posting a picture will help. Often I like to pick a quilting pattern based on some other component of the quilt. Maybe there is some design in one of your fabrics that could be repeated in the quilting.

I've seen leaves and waves and pebbles/circles on these quilts and they all can look nice depending on what else is going on with the quilt.

ManiacQuilter2 07-24-2015 01:11 PM

I have never made one before but if you have any large stencils with a background design, mark the quilt and quilt it that way.

Here is the photo....couldn't figure out how to post a photo from a smart phone...'stupid human' haha!

It was fun and fast to put together...kinda wish that my red was spread throughout a bit better. All I did was open and then go in order.

I used my walking foot and did straight line quilting down the center of each strip.

Small crosshatching looks great on most quilts. I love the look it gives. Not many do crosshatching anymore and it's so simple.

OhCanada 07-24-2015 02:35 PM

I don't know what type of domestic sewing machine you have, but if it has a serpentine stitch then running that down each long seam using a walking foot would be very nice, and easy to do as well.

Latrinka 07-24-2015 03:00 PM

Really cute quilt! I also love doing jelly roll race quilts! I would probly do a serpentine down each seam, or maybe even a decorative down the center of each strip. I love crosshatching on quilts too, so it just depends on what you feel like doing! I've done the crosshatching using the painters tape, worked really well. Good Luck!

Very pretty quilt top! I love cross hatching as well. Such a nice look!

Congrats on your first jelly roll! I've opened four now and loving them (smile).

crafty-kid 07-24-2015 04:17 PM

Thanks for the support. I do have lots of built in decorative stitches on my machine, so that might be the best option...and for the thread color? The back of the quilt is gray with red and black flowers/stems...a smaller print.

merrylouw 07-24-2015 06:35 PM

I made one almost exactly the same as yours. I'm planning on using my walking foot and making gently waving lines in each strip. I hope that will give it some movement. I haven't taken a picture of mine, yet, or I'd show you.

Yours is really cute.

Very nice looking quilt. Love a strip quilt.

toverly 07-25-2015 03:42 AM

Very nice! I love making jelly roll race quilts. I would probably use red thread but then, I like contrasting thread.

sewbizgirl 07-25-2015 05:48 AM

Quickest and easiest would be wavy vertical lines about 2-2.5" apart. You can use a walking foot. The quilting lines would go opposite the direction of the jelly roll strips.

wildyard 07-25-2015 08:34 AM

Great quilt. You are wishing for the red more evenly spread so I'd quilt it with the red! That would pull it all together.

tinliz 07-25-2015 09:16 AM

If you are going to put S's in the squares, how about writing messages or sayings in some of the strips. You could place the then right side up in some strips and upside down in others. Between words you could use wavy lines.
I am using the same fabric to make a large hexagon quilt.

Bree123 07-25-2015 09:45 AM

I think quilting large daisies on the quilt would look nice. I saw a quilt with them somewhere (if I remember I'll post the link) with large daisies quilted over the entire top of the quilt & it looked stunning.

MargeD 07-25-2015 09:54 AM

I love the colors in your jelly roll, and often simple straight line quilting is the best way to quilt a quilt like this. Nice job.

crafty-kid 07-25-2015 09:59 AM

Bree...I have seen that and thought that would be cute too....but as this is for my brother and his new wife, I changed my mind. He is a truck driver/Harley rider...I'm thinking this might be too 'girly' already. haha

Melanie Rudy 07-25-2015 10:06 AM

I've done a few Jelly Roll Race quilts and have quilted them with wavy lines. I like to do a few lines close together, then a space, then a few more lines close together. I don't have a photo of a Jelly Roll Race that I have done, but this denim quilt will give you the idea.

Thanks Melanie...I like that!

Haha. And here I was picturing this scrawny nerdy kid. It's funny how we imagine people when we know nothing about them.

It's way beyond my quilting level, but man, how cool would it be to make a quilt with motorcycles quilted on it!

What about the kind of wavy lines in the border of this quilt:

Bree....I already made him a quilt of a lot of his old Harley t-shirts, it's a king size with 49 shirt squares. Being that they are both in their late 50's early 60's I hope that they like both of the quilts...I don't plan on making another for him, because my 3 sisters will expect one or two also. haha

Great race quilt!

Very nice jelly roll race 2. Love the colors. Great job!

borntoquilt 07-26-2015 01:09 PM

Teri-if you aren't all sandwiched and ready to quilt you could ALWAYS take some of those rows apart and re-sew them so you reds are more spaced out and to your liking... Very pretty BTW! I would cross-hatch... it is fast, looks good and easy for not so experienced quilter..... show us when it is finished....

butterflies5518 07-26-2015 05:13 PM

I have done several jelly roll races and cross hatching is my choice. On the right side measure down 10 inches from top corner, on left side measure up 8 inches from bottom corner. Connect the two points with stitching and stitch next rows the desired widths. I have used 1.5' to 2' and sometimes vary them for just a bit more interest. Your quilt is great! Love the colors.

T-Anne 07-26-2015 05:16 PM

We did this at church and that is what I did too. I love jelly rolls! lo

What a great looking quilt. I plan to do my first one in the near future and can only hope mine turns out as nice as yours. ho

meme3549 07-28-2015 06:52 PM

I saw one channel quilted and it was lovely and easy.

mom-6 07-28-2015 09:52 PM

On mine I just did a gently curved wave down each strip. Tried to have them more or less offset so no need to try matching up the curve.
