I started another quilt--but
3 Attachment(s)
I've started another quilt. But I'm not sure what color triangles to use for the smaller triangles. I have 3 of the colors triangles, already cut. Check the info on the 3 pictures, that I've posted. This is the block in the magazine, called Flying Dutchman. This is the dummy block, I played with. The smaller triangles is what i need a color for. The smaller triangles is the light purple print, around the green triangles. Here are the 3 colored triangles, I have already cut out. THANKS for everyones input

I kind of like the black one
Yellow might look good too |
It seems to me that the fabric for the smaller triangles should offer a contrast to the fabric for the inner pinwheel (the green fabric in your dummy block). Which of the fabrics are you planning on using for the inner pinwheel?
With the three fabrics you have there, I'm thinking add something in the gold, tan, brown neighborhood. |

You seem to have the bold fabrics on the outside edges of the block. Is that the part of the block you want to accent??
I think the black would make the green pinwheel stand out. The red is too close to the red you already have, and to me, the dark green doesn't go with the other colors, but that could be just the photograph.
I read this question as he's already planning on using the black, red, and green fabrics that are in the bottom picture and trying to come up with a color for the fourth fabric. Maybe some clarification is in order.

It might help to know which of the three (black, red, green) will be the inner pinwheel that will "match" to the yet-to-be-chosen color. However ... it's clear that you will need a light color to contrast with the other colors. I think I would choose a white, or white with gold, or gold with white. Something with not too much print, plainish - to settle the eye. |
I agree a light is needed for good contrast, I would go with a yellow or gold-ish or something creamy. I love the block!

SORRY everyone for the confusion--& a lay out roughly

Sorry everyone for the confusion. Maybe you get a better ideal on the small triangles, I want to use. With this picture. Thanks everyone. DonThe smaller triangles around the green, will be another pinwheel.
Much better, Don. What will you be using around the green? Personally I think a baby/sky blue would work really well.

The block I know as Flying Dutchman is a bit different than yours....check out on web.....I should create a large pinwheel from the flying geese blocks....by correct color placement. Check out on web
Your block is a bit different from what I know as Flying Dutchman...placing of color in flying geese will create a pinwheel...do a search on the web and check out the various options,
I think you could pull in the white you have on the outside, it would really bring out the green pinwheel. But whatever you choose I think it should be something light...maybe yellow or tan. It's a great block, let us know what you pick!
I think you need a green the color of the leaves in the red print. froggyintexas

I would suggest a creamy white tone on tone- there are many different types of blender fabrics depending on the look you want. I love the fabrics you've chosen!
I'm mostly sticking with my original answer. I said gold/tan/brown, but with the green as the inner pinwheel, I'd probably go with the lighter end of that, gold/tan/cream.
While I think a dark brown could provide a nice contrast with the green, making it more like the dark red from the magazine picture, I'm worried it wouldn't have enough contrast against the black fabric. A lighter color seems safer. Now surprise us all by choosing purple. :) |
A creamy yellow or a lighter green ... Even a pink. Whatever you can pick up from the prints that flows
It seem to me that the inner pinwheel is "lost". There is not enough contrast between those fabrics. Are they all "muddy mediums"? It is a lovely pattern, and lovely fabrics, but you need contrast to see the pinwheels.

Don, What I find that works great for me when I get stuck is to chose many different fabrics from my stash then one at a time, roll enough fabric out so I can lay the pieces you already have cut out on top of that fabric.
This will give you the best picture of how they work or don't work together. You may even find that the white you have as the outside works better on the inside with the green. Then doing the outer pieces in a different color like a beige or tan. The one color that I see in all the fabrics other then the white is green. But the Green you are using as the middle pinwheel is more a med or dark green. If I were to try this using my way. I would first lay out a piece of lighter green that matched the color in the red fabric to see if I liked it. My second choice would be to try a piece that matched the flowers in the red piece (it looks like a peach or beige on my computer). But I think you get the picture. I didn't pick colors in the black fabric because they all look like light & dark reds, green and white which would give you to many of the same colors. Anyway, I hope this helps some. |
Seasaw2mch has the same idea that I was thinking. Lay the pieces of the block that you already have on top of different color choices to preview what it would look like. If you post pictures of the previews, I'm sure people on this board will be glad to help you decide which of the colors looks the best. Although you'll get many different responses!

I do believe the art principal would work. Dark, medium. light. the fabric should have contrast. don't put two fabrics of the same value next to each other
I think they are all well put my friend ,but maybe a bright gold yellow to make those sm triangles pop out more in the block
I'm also thinking a rich buttery yellow gold cuz your other colors are rich jewel tones and something less deep would perhaps seem washed out.
I see a lavender color in the black fabric that might be just right next to the green, and to the others. I love the way the lavender fits with the other colors in your dummy block.
In the red fabric there is an element of the design with what (on my monitor) looks a gold/orange dot pattern (around the berry bit with the leaves) maybe that could be a good choice for the little triangles.
I'd try some yellows in there to find which one I liked best.
Whatever you decide Don it will be a great quilt (as always yours are!)
I think it needs to be a darker color, maybe a blue or green, purple maybe even an rust. The light purple is definitely out
I like your first choice, the dummy block.
