I think I need to take a basic math class.
:o So I am making a D9P and I cut the material in strips at 4.5 inches. Well I should of done 5 if I wanted a 12 in block..
So now my quilt will be a little smaller then I intended. Now I have to decide if I want to put sashing in between the blocks to make it 12 inch or just do a couple of borders..LOL |
I usually cut first and think later too. It makes for some interesting solutions though!

You won't get a 12" block doing a D9P unless you cut odd size squares (4.666"). Cutting 4.5" squares will get you a 11.5" finished block, 5" squares will get you a 13" finished block. Just plan to adjust the rest of the quilt accordingly. Enlarge/reduce borders to get the overall size you want. There's no rule that the blocks HAVE to always be 12". :)
D9P looks great with sashing too. I finished this top recently. |

Wow thanks Kate..love the quilt. Thanks Lisa

I just made 2 D9P throw size quilts, cutting 4.5 squares and they come out to a nice size. I add a 1" inner border and cut the border fabric 6". They are approx. 47 X 71.

Thanks for the laugh this morning. I have a genius level IQ. I'm good at regular math. I understand geometry and algebra. So why is it that when it comes to quilting math, I'm a blithering idiot?????

I would maybe lay the blocks together 1st. And then maybe lay the blocks apart, with roughly the sashing width, you want to use. And maybe if you have a color of sashing, you will want to use. Lay the block's on top of your sashing material. GOOD LUCK.
