I think I'm going to do it....my own "swap style" cultural quilt
I've been wanting to make some sort of cultural/international quilt for some time now. I've done several missions trips and love culture in general and want a way to carry my tastes with me. (I tend to paint and decorate with cultural flair...for example, I've painted a map silhouette of down town Nairobi on my wall and LOVE it, but realised I want something portable too).
I wasn't sure how to go about it...color pallete, style, pattern. Then I was inspired by some of the finished quilts in the block swaps. So, swap style international quilt, here I come! Blocks will be divisible by 3 finished (like many of the swaps), and up to 12inches big. my ideas include (some pic ideas below) iconic buildings (big ben, great wall, etc), clothing (kimono, sombrero, sunbonnet sue in german clothing?), iconic images (double decker buses, paper lanterns, etc) flags, symbols (celtic, african), transportation (bikes, those italian boats with the guy standing in the back :) )and so on. some inspirational images http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I3EuTVJrem...0/IMG_9121.JPG http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sRoPQc8yOw...%2B2%2B001.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_RFaaIx1EBk...1600/ghana.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4116/...7221a4c6d3.jpg off to get some fabric organized! |
I love those little ships!

What a great idea! Definitely the Jamaica block has to be red, green, black and yellow. Love those appliques - and you could also do a quilt of just international flags.
