I think I've broken my Fabric Mule's back!

As I have posted before, DH is currently working in NC and I 'occasionally' order a 'few things' from US based online quilt stores, and have them delivered to his hotel (who could resist free US shipping instead of paying $20+ per order for shipping to Canada. Essentially, he is my Fabric Mule, hauling my albeit legitimate purchases, across the border for me.

Well, 'Possibilities in Quilting' has been having an awesome sale and I think I went a little overboard. He said the package must weigh 30 lbs. and he is NOT a happy camper. I did point out that I had to go almost a year without ordering (because he had a contract that had him working from home) so this was 'sort of' catch-up. He did not seem to think that was a valid point.

Guess I'll have to cool it for a little while (especially since I 'forgot' to tell him that there was going to be a 'little package'-only 8 yards--arriving from Wolph33. ) Ummm.....oops!

lfstamper 03-17-2014 06:11 PM

Too funny - at least the patterns were light! Never heard of Possibilites so will have to check them out. What a bad influence this is...lol.

Lori S 03-17-2014 06:17 PM

I completely understand.. you were thinking of all that value/savings... but I think you may owe him something when he gets home!

I went and checked out why he was so loaded... that is a great sale!

Twisted Quilter 03-17-2014 06:31 PM

Thanks for sharing, I needed a good laugh! :D

Yeppers!!!!

AliKat 03-17-2014 09:55 PM

Barter with him. It works. Hey, I didn't say what to barter with.

notmorecraft 03-17-2014 10:54 PM

I hope he's driving or the airline will charge him excess baggage which could end up more than your shipping costs lol. Well done for getting such a good deal on your goodies. x

justflyingin 03-17-2014 11:56 PM

Wow. I can totally understand your need to buy during this sale, esp. since your location and all. And getting it home for free! Tell him you really appreciate it and make sure you make some of his favorite goodies/meals for him in appreciation. These prices are really good and lots and lots of blender types!

I agree, you do owe him BIG TIME!! Start making a homecoming that he will NEVER forget !!! :)

joyce blint 03-18-2014 05:34 AM

Wow! Good fabric for $1.99-$3.99! Now that's a sale!!

Quilter 65 03-18-2014 06:45 AM

Going to check out the sale. Maybe he should exercise so he can lift heavier packages??? Probably not a good suggestion to make! My husband just carries them in from the box and silently hands them to me. Sometimes I get "the look".

pocoellie 03-18-2014 07:51 AM

I can certainly understand why you ordered "quite a bit". If I had any spare money and room, I would order some fabric also. Just tell your husband that you can't possibly pass up THAT great of a sale. LOL

bearisgray 03-18-2014 08:52 AM

The title of this thread made me laugh! Even the best trained " mules" can get balky now and then. :)

jcrow 03-18-2014 09:22 AM

IMOP I think you only owe him a big 'Thank you'. I understand your plight. I would have done exactly the same thing. I bet you can't wait to get your hands on that package. Congratulations!!! The fun will begin when he brings it to you.

Twisted Quilter 03-18-2014 09:48 AM

How are the shipping costs on this website? I would like to order, but I hate it when you have to put in all of your credit card info prior to getting the shipping costs.

pinkcastle 03-18-2014 10:17 AM

Thanks for the heads-up on the sale! I just added a bit more to my stash. I love buying fabric on sale! And yep, I'd say that treating your DH when he gets back would be a good thing. By the way, I love your term "fabric mule".

quilt addict 03-18-2014 11:20 AM

Funny and well, what else can you do with such a great sale.

Hi Bev. The shipping costs are listed and go by the dollar amount of the purchase. Look under the FAQ.

busy fingers 03-18-2014 12:00 PM

He should be thankful that it is only 30:lb :D:

With the way prices are going you certainly got a great bargain. Give him a big kiss/kisses as he walks through the door

GingerK 03-18-2014 12:42 PM

Sorry I didn't share this site earlier. This is the second order I have placed with them. They are a touch slower than some, in filling, and they have removed the 'free shipping' during the sale, but their service has been absolutely great and the quality of fabric and notions is wonderful.

Here's another little tidbit of info: Did you know that Walmart.com has 5 packs of 45 mm. Olfa blades for under $20? You can order online and pick them up at your local store. DH found that one for me. So I guess I owe him really really big!

I think I'll tell him it's all a trade off for the snowblowing I've had to do this winter. He hurt his knee last autumn and can not handle the snowblower. Our driveway is 600 ft. long and we have had more snow this winter than in the last 10 years!

Thanks Havplenty!

IrishNY 03-18-2014 04:15 PM

Apologize and tell him that he's right to be upset and that from now on you'll pay the $20 shipping fee for each order. He'll change his position pretty quick, I bet. :)

I do hate when they lose their sense of humor!

cowgirlquilter 03-18-2014 06:12 PM

Woo hoo! Maybe some special baking of treats????? Winks????? Extra smiles?????? Lol!

terri bb 03-18-2014 06:21 PM

oh what a fabulous post!

Yooper32 03-19-2014 03:29 AM

I hope that he has half the good humor that you have. There was my morning laugh.

I checked that out too. They are listed under 'store policies' link. Barb

Barbpr 03-19-2014 04:03 AM

Thanks for the link. I order a lot while wintering down south as our fabric is so expensive in Canada. When home, I sometimes order from Connecting threads and it usually only costs about $7 for shipping, duty and taxes. Donation quilts seem to go faster with $5 a yard fabric than $22 a meter fabric!

As for the snow blowing, there is so much snow back home I can't imagine handling a long driveway on my own. So you certainly deserve a reward.

When I checked the site, items I really liked were sold out. Methinks you bought the store! Good job..

Retired Fire Chief 03-19-2014 04:22 AM

Maybe he was just having a bad day. Make him a batch of cookies for him to come home to, that would unruffled my DH's feathers - plus I would remind him of all the stuff he buys!

Snooze2978 03-19-2014 07:01 AM

Its amazing how heavy fabric can get when you purchase a bunch of it. Just received an order and it was in a large box and was fairly heavy. Love taking each piece out of the box to drool over.........:-)

MargeD 03-19-2014 10:41 AM

While DH may be a little upset, pointing out how much you saved in shipping costs alone, might lessen the blow. Maybe. Maybe a special dinner with all his favorites when he comes home might help, a bottle of his favorite wine, etc. When my DH and I first met I had limited resources, so I would always look for sales to help keep my budget in line. Apparently he thought I went a little overboard because he told me "I think you'd buy an elephant if it were on sale.!!" I've been collecting elephants and fabric, ever since. LOL

Caswews 03-19-2014 10:43 AM

LOL Fabric mule .. A new word for my vocabulary .. LOL LOVE IT !!!

Well it could of been 60 pounds !LOL

JanieH 03-19-2014 11:11 AM

I loved your story! Give him a hug from me and tell him you are worth it!

Iraxy 03-19-2014 06:55 PM

I had to laugh out loud as I had my DH bring me some fabric from Hawaii several years ago and he asked me if he was my "drug mule" as he calls my fabric my "addiction."

oldtisme 03-19-2014 09:04 PM

What a great sale!! To bad we just found out how many thousands of dollars we owe for income taxes this year. I'm going to have to stop my fabric of the month clubs & no magazine renewals....not a happy camper:(. Oh well happy I have a fair about of stash

tuckyquilter 03-19-2014 10:03 PM

Clever girl you are. I think he should give you a medal for "being so thrifty" and saving all that shipping money! lol

cathyre 03-20-2014 12:09 AM

Well I have to confess a few years ago we had a Military posting to the USA
I was jumping around like I had just won the first prize in beauty show...
a stunning beauty I am not...my husband ask what I was so excited about
I said "do know its the cheapest place on earth to buy quilting fabric"
Well when we packed to go and the removalist came to collect our boxes, 60
were sent from Australia and 270 came back home Mostly filled with fabric I
have had a wonderful time sewing ever since...

You just enjoy you fabrics when they arrive home Cathy

Knitette 03-20-2014 01:07 AM

Lol! My DH is my Fabric Mule too and the only thing that saves his back is that there is a Luggage Allowance he has to stick to (more or less.........).

In fact, when he was in Houston last year I discovered Walmart's 'Ship to Store' and had him collect not only notions etc for me, but Lego for DGS and the holdall to put it all in!

As for the June Tailor Shape Cut he had to hand carry all the way without bending (as well as trying to find the Airport Shuttle bus he left it on)...................

mjhaess 03-21-2014 06:14 AM

Too funny....Just remind him of how much money you saved him on shipping....He will et over it..
