I want to do a Civil War block quilt....
 

My son is a Civil War/WWII history buff. He is now a deputy sheriff. I am making everyone quilts for christmas this year and want to do his with a Civil War/WWII "theme" of colors and blocks. I see some sites with "civil war" quilts, but none really strike me. I want it to not be really busy as most of them are.

ANyone have any sites or suggestions etc as to good blocks for this theme? I see that in what I do see...they are usually a sampler style of quilt...but I think that is to girlish for him and to busy...kind of to much...so I want maybe just 4 different blocks...one in the middle, 2 in the outer and 1 for the border. And I see dark/greyish blues, reds and off white for the "dirty white" or "antique white" effect and also dark greens and browns..paisley is common and I just picked up paisley theme flannel for the back, that has the marrons and blues and off whites in it.. I can do the Northern Star perfectly but want more than just stars.

I know Kaye England has a Civil War sampler quilt on Craftsy. You might not want to do all of the blocks, but the class comes with the instructions for all of the blocks and she shows you how to easily construct them all. I have put mine together and it was easy. I really enjoyed the class, and if you can find it when they are having their $20 sale it's completely worth it. I purchased mine when it was $40 and will do it again.

You could choose the blocks you wanted to do and make your own quilt if you wanted, although see has each block and the history behind it, which your son might find interesting.

The quilt she has might be too busy for your son, but you could make any type of quilt out of any of the numerous blocks she shows you. :)

I made one for my husband.It's a free pattern called Dixie. It's not the usual busy sampler look. Can't remember where i found it but i bet you can google it. The same sight also had a couple other free CW patterns. I just did it a few months ago. Dixie has the dates of the CW appliqued on it it...instead i put the name of my husband's great grandfather's regiment. It uses a panel in the center. I used Confederate Generals, but you could substitute any of the available panels out there. My husband loves it and believe me, he wouldn't know a quilt if it fell on his head. Happy quilting...i love CW quilts.

I'm curious. Is a civil war quilt one that is done in colors that were popular in 1860-1864? one that is a copy of ones in museums that survived from the early 1860's? ones that have appliques of scenes or items that depict things from the civil war? Just what makes a civil war quilt? What is the difference in a civilian 1860's quilt and a war 1860's quilt?

Check out my Civil War swap - one, two, three......several blocks have been posted of those in the swap. I choose only three blocks to swap out, the Double T has become a favorite, and Shoo Fly and Star of Virginia have made nice complimentary blocks.

Check out the free patterns on www.unitednations.com. There are several on that site thst might interest you. There's one named Battlehymn 1862, but the one I like best is called Comfort. I think it would be beautiful in CW fabric. Hope this helps. :-)
