I want to go bigger!
 

I have completed a quilt (quilted and bound) that is somewhere between full and not quite queen size. It's too small for my queen bed and I'm wondering if I can make it bigger and what's a good way to go about it. Help!

It would be easier to advise if we had a photo to go by. You could undo the binding and add wide borders, or turn the quilt on-point by making up 4 triangles and sew to each side. Depends on how much work you want to do, and what the quilt looks like.

My suggestion would be to look up "Pot holder quilts. They are made of completed quilts blocks that quilted and bound before attaching them together. Following that method, I would measure each side, and one or both ends to see what size the additions need to be, then create each section separately. When they are finished, hand stitch the sections together using a small ladder stitch. If that does not interest you, you could put the sections together as far as the finished quilting, then use one of the methods to QAG them together. Whenever I have a new method, I check YouTube to see if there is any videos to watch for inspiration.

Remove the binding, determine the size you want to add. Use the ( quilt as you go) method to make borders or blocks you want to add. After the additional pieces are made and quilted add them, then rebind.

I have a quilt on my queen size bed that took me about 5 years to make (we moved twice in that time and it has tons of applique so took forever). We have been considering buying a king size bed and I've wondered the same thing. I thought I would just make a 3 sided piece (like a border but for just the sides and the bottom) to add on with snaps. It would be like seeing a bed skirt coming out from somewhere underneath the quilt drop part. I figure if I ever wanted to take that piece off I could use it as a queen size again by just removing the snaps. I do like the idea of taking the binding off and adding then rebinding. It wouldn't work for mine because of the way I bound it but it sounds like a tried and true method. Let us know what worked after you do it ok?

A picture would help. My parents asked me to enlarge a quilt I made for their queen-sized bed--I made it to be used as a quilt, but they loved it and wanted it as a bedspread instead. The quilt had wide (3") borders, so, rather than take the time to remove the binding, I simply cut it off; made additional blocks to enlarge the quilt; quilted the additions (bottom and both sides); and attached them using the quilt-as-you-go method. New binding all around, and no one would know that it had been changed.

Sounds like a lot of work. I might just donate it and start over making a larger quilt.

I was going to make the same suggestion as WandaVA, just slice the binding right off and add the borders you need to get to your desired dimensions. You could seam rip the binding in front of a tv show if you are wanting to save it for another project or have enough material to add it back onto the newly sized finished quilt. Good luck.

I'd just buy a plain spread that is the size you want and compliments the colors of your quilt and put it on the bed. Then layer the quilt over that. You've also got the spread that you could do that with other quilts as well. Quick, easy, done.
