Ice cream and quilts
 

When I was a kid, we used to have lots of icecream socials at our Community building. Families would bring freezers of home made ice cream and we would play games and eat the ice cream afterward. It was such fun!!! I remember how mama wrapped an old quilt around the freezer to keep it from melting when daddy packed it in the turtle hull of the car. (most people call it the trunk) That old quilt kept the ice cream nice a firm even in the dead of summer! Oh, what memories! Does anybody besides me remember those days???

I had forgotten about the term "turtle hull" but that's what we called ours. Also, our mothers would meet at an old school once a week, bring food and quilt while the kids played. Dads would sometimes come for awhile, eat and make repairs around the building. Yes, what fun days :o

I had not thought about that for years "the turtle hull" thank you for the memories!!!!

Oh Tartan ... we still have Strawberry Socials in our area. The "in season" ones taste oh so much better than the imports.



In contrast, not too many years ago, I remember ladies bringing roast turkeys to our church suppers .... turkey in in a covered roasting pan, all wrapped in a quilt to keep it warm, complete with a couple of diaper pins to hold the quilt in place.

They would arrive with "their babies"!

With increased food safety concerns, definitely a thing of the past ... and turkeys roasted on site.

I remember the ice cream socials but not the "turtle hull". It was always a trunk to us, lol. But there are just too many great memories that I feel pasted too fast!!!

Our church just held an ice cream social a couple of weeks ago. It was our first and such a success it was decided to be held annually. It was a REALLY HOT day and we had no idea how successful (or not) it would be. It was a huge success and what a good time we had. The last freezer was hand cranked as people were coming and some had no idea how homemade ice cream was made.
