Idea for backing on my next quilt...Rough Draft picture included
 

Hubby requested a quilt made out of his old uniforms and T-Shirts. I have everything but a couple tshirt cut out and interfaced. He does not want a binding so I just have to figure out the backing. He said, just for me, he would like Red, White and Blue type backing. Any suggestions? Is there a flag type backing or something similar? The quilt will be big, about 98" x 84" so the backing will either have to be pieced or find a 108" backing.

I just made one for my son out of army fabrics and old uniforms too. I'm putting the army fabric on the back. It's out there if you look I bought it years ago and my ex husband was nice enough to give his old uniforms because the fabric had BDU. Or if you want it warm I would put fleece or flannel since the uniforms aren't the softest material. Good luck!! I also took the name plates off the BDU's and put them on the quilt. Love your quilt!!

This is the time of year when patriotic and red/white/blue fabric should be hitting the shelves, so it should be easy to find. I just posted this method on another thread, it might be a good idea for your piecing your backing from regular 44" wide quilting fabric.

Thanks so much Peckish for the link, I need to try this method. I have seen it before and most times my quilts are large than these.

The Army quilt will be very nice.

If he doesn't want bindin, what are you going to do on the edge? Or did you mean he doesn't want a border?

He said no binding. I had seen where you sew the top to the batting then sew on the backing and flip out. I am not sure of that will be sturdy enough for this size quilt though. Any thoughts?

And I think I will do a natural backing and sew on some of his patches in a section. I think that would look better.

I think you could do it that way, then after turning inside out I would do some type of topstitch around the edges, possibly a decorative stitch....it will strengthen the edges considerably....the quilting will also strengthen and stabilize the entire quilt.

Thanks. I planned to topstitch the edges if I went that route....and since this is his quilt, I want to do like he wants but in a way it will last also.

Top stitching would be needed. I may even do 2 rows if I didn't use a decorative stitch.
