The domestic violence shelter near me is always soliciting donations of household goods. I know when you say "charity quilting" most people think blankets, but I am thinking I'll make up a batch of potholders for them.

I'm going to call first (some other day; I called the office today and I think they're closed because of the weather) to make sure they really would need/use them, but it seems like something that would be useful, and I have a TON of scraps I could use for this, both fabric and batting.

That is a wonderful idea!

Great idea!! Do you put that heat resistant stuff in yours? :)

Agree, great idea. Plus you can do a lot more than if you're doing quilts, so more people can benefit!

I either use Insulbrite or several layers of recycled denim and/or cotton batting.

I think that this is a great idea. I used to be the Exec. Dir. of a family homeless shelter, and I know that we would have loved this. We gathered this kind of item for immediate use in our kitchen, but also to give to our families when they moved out to their new apartments.

But, it is a good idea to check with this shelter first, to make sure that they have the storage space to accept your proposed gifts.

LeslieFrost - good to know from someone with experience that it would be useful...

I like the idea of potholders, too because I can do one here and one there between my larger projects, and use "test sandwiches" for quilting, test blocks, etc.

pot holders, placemats and changing pads are all smaller projects that the shelter's accept happily around here.

ckcowl - how do you make changing pads?
