I like to kind of match the front, but I also usually piece the back. Back art can be as interesting as the front!

Me three. I love sheets, there is so much fabric in it that I can use it for the backing on lap robes when I don't use fleece. And then I can use the rest of it for applique, which I love to do for kids' quilts or lap robes.
Thrift shops, yard sales or church sales, all of them are good.
Sheets will last for years and years. And lots of the really old quilts still in use have muslin on their backs, and even then sometimes sheets.
