Ideas for Daughters Quilt

1 Attachment(s)
My daughter has asked me to make a quilt for her. She is very picky about her fabric selections and has finally found the focal fabric. She wants the quilt done in turquoise and browns.

I have 5 fabrics for the quilt. As you can see the first fabric to the left is the focal fabric. I need ideas on a quilt pattern using 5 fabrics only for the quilt top. I would like a pattern utilizing a large center block for the focal fabric. She likes large block quilt tops.

Any pattern come to mind? Appreciate any advise for this project. Thank you for hot and humid Texas. Too hot to be outside so being inside quilting is the way to go!

Fabrics are gorgeous! How about Warm Wishes? http://www.stcroixquilters.com/Guild%20sub-web/SUPPLY%20LIST%202013/WARM%20WISHES%20supply%20list.pdf

Take Five is a good choice. It is all straight lines, no curves.

Kathy Brown's second book, 'More Take 5 Quilts', has lots of beautiful quilt patterns in it. I really love her aesthetic. You can see all the patterns in the book if you go look it up on amazon (and in her first book, though I don't think those are as nice).

The fabrics are beautiful.... love the combination. I have a favorite book that I hand to my loved ones when I'm planning on making a quilt for them, "Leisure Arts Presents Encyclopedia of Classic Quilt Patterns". I tell them to pick the quilt and then I make it. The last one I did was for my daughter.... a cathedral window. That one took some time. But she LOVES it so it was worth it. There are 101 quilts in that book with beautiful pictures of the finished quilts and all the instructions. I love that book so much that I have one at my winter house and one at my summer house.

Take a look at some of the Big Block Quilt patterns. There might be one there you like.

You didn't say what size of a quilt she wanted. If you are thinking about a lap size, maybe a BQ or BQ2. They have big blocks and come together quite quickly. For a larger bed size quilt, there is a free pattern on Wilmington Prints:

I'm visualizing this fabric in square-in-a-square blocks, 10" to 14" in size, set on-point, alternating with 4-patch blocks.

Good luck, whatever you decide; your daughter will be pleased.

I like the BQ quilts. My LQS had 2 displayed that were beautiful. I have large poppy print that I got the patterns for. I may even do some Maxine blocks in BQ design. Love Maxine and have 4th of July panel that is sooo funny! Gotta get busy! Love your daughters choices!

This is a 10 minute block or it can be called a bow tie block.

Here's an idea that you could use "as is" or tweak to fit what you or your daughter want in the end.

http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...a-t148587.htmlThere is a great pattern called "Focus Pocus" by Swirly girls (I think) - it has a great large blocks and it looks pretty easy to put together. Here is a previous post

BQ or BQ2. Exactly what I was thinking....

Maureen, love Focus Pocus! You ladies have given me so many ideas. I am going to have my daughter review your suggestions. Will post a picture of the finished quilt top. Thanks again for all who responded. You ladies are the best!

Have you seen the panel for daughters? It has about 10 sayings on it and they can be cut apart and used as squares for on the back. Sweet sayings & inspirational sayings.

How about "Around the corner"?

Waal 06-10-2014 04:57 AM

"Just Can't Cut It" by All Washed Up would be perfect if you have enough fabric for the size you want to make. The focus fabric is a 12.5" square, and the five other fabrics make up the other block. It is very simple, but I love the pattern. Great use with your focus fabric and coordinating fabrics.

The 5 yard quilt is a great pattern.

How about Pinwheels? I am really crazy about that pattern, and think the colors could be used well in that pattern.
It will be beautiful, no matter what!

Those would look great in a southwestern theme. Just google and see what kind of simple great looking blocks come up.

What about an Irish Chain quilt. The floral could be the large spaces with the other fabrics the chain. Elanor Burns has simple strip pieced directions for doing it.

Jakers1 06-10-2014 07:39 AM

I too love those colors - especially the print on the right. Do you have a manufacturer or name of the fabric?

MargeD 06-10-2014 07:57 AM

Sewing with Nancy had a show about large block quilts, you might find something there that you would like.

I made one called piano keys... http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...s-t190170.html

matraina 06-10-2014 12:09 PM

Can't help you with a pattern but absolutely love your fabric

souffoue 06-13-2014 11:37 PM

Love the colors and fabrics! Can't wait to see the finished quilt!

KathyC9511 06-16-2014 04:16 AM

She got the brown fabric at Joanns. It is Fabric Traditions 2006.
