Ideas for a guild challenge?
 

Last year our guild did a mystery block challenge, this year we are doing the crayon box challenge. If I organize another challenge for next year, I want it to be one that you can just give the members that want to participate all the information at the beginning of the time. That is how we did the crayon box challenge, as last year we gave out a different block each month, and it became a nightmare to get the information to people each month if they did not show up on the day we worked on it. Any ideas?

My guild is doing a paint chip challenge this year. There are a lot of different ways of doing this, here's how we did ours. I picked up paint chips from the paint dept. at Walmart (theirs has 7 shades on it, or you can pick them up anywhere), placed them in envelopes with numbers on the envelopes and passed out "instruction" sheets with numbers to correspond with the envelopes. Each member took a sheet and whatever number was on that sheet, that's the envelope they received. They were instructed to use at least 3 of the shades on their paint chip, they could use as much or as little of that shade they wanted, but it had to be visible. They could add whatever fabrics they wanted, the project has to be at least 18" x 18". No trading of paint chips between members, remember this is a challenge. They couldn't open their envelopes until they left the meeting, and believe me they were anxious to leave to see what color they had received. They were told to keep their paint chip to attach it to their project for show and tell. We made the project due for our last meeting in September so it could be shown at our quilt show in November. They were not required to participate if they didn't want to. One member mentioned last night she had hers done already! I haven't even started mine yet and it was my idea! Lastly they were instructed to have fun with this project.

AChristina- that sounds like SO much fun! (We should do that here! Anyone wanna organize it? I'm in- LOL!)

Our guild challenge was to make as many as we could of 12 1/2 inch unfinished blocks in patriotic colors for our Quilts of Valor project. It was announced in October and due in May. Our small sewing group did a whole quilt top together, plus we are each working on blocks. Then in June, we will use this as our workshop to assemble quilt tops with blocks that were turned it.

Those sound like such fun ideas! I'm hoping my quild has fun projects like this.

I attended a local show last weekend and their challenge quilt was also a paint chip challenge. There were some really nice quilts and they did a great job matching fabrics on their paint chips, with quite a variety of patterns/blocks. They were also allowed to add either black or white to their chip colors, but no other colors. It made for a nice display of monochromatic quilts. Another show I was at, everyone received two pieces of fabric that had to be incorporated in some way into the quilt, even in a very small way. I think one was a zebra stripe and the other a bright floral. It was fun too look for the fabrics in everyone's finished work. Another challenge I saw, the quilt had to incorporate letters or words in some way, a maximum of two inches high. There were a lot of fun interpretations of themes with that.

When I read the title, I thought of one colour quilt, as many shades as you wish. Then thought possible a bit boring although would depend on colour. Leave you with my ponderings.

We are doing a miniature quilt challenge. Anything goes as long as it's under 20" I'm actually piecing a min.fan quilt or also called doll quilts......Fun

On another forum I frequent, everyone is given a 10" piece of focus fabric and told to make it into a 12" block using whatever technique and other fabrics they choose. All the blocks are turned it for a drawing, and someone wins all of them. It's always interesting to see the variety of blocks people come up with from the same fabric.
