HI
A friend of mine is retiring after thirty years of working with special needs children. She told me she wanted to take up quilting. She bought a sewing machine.. I have taken up a collection at work and thought I would make her a starter kit (i.e. mat, rotary cutter, ruler...etc). My question... What is the one thing you think absolutely needs to go in the kit... And do you have a favorite brand?
Thank you. Any other suggestions would be fun as well.

1/4" foot for her sewing machine. It really helps keep the seams even.
What a great friend you are to do this for her.

Walking foot (if it didn't come with her machine), sense of humor, IOU for help, nice (nice I mean big) wine glass and a bottle of wine (for those nights that she'll be FMQ)! Oh yeah, I forgot, chocolate.

A few fat quarters or charms you think she will love!

Good Luck to your Friend.... IOU for the lessons and easy ways to get them finished !!

Could also make up a 2 color kit w/strips and first block made for a how to example.

I would include a gift certificate to a LQS.
A can of spray starch or sizing
A thimble for her hand sewing the bindings
Quilting pins (I have the yellow flower pins)
A pin cushion
Scissors

Me, too! Sometimes I think I make a quilt twice - once the wrong way and once the right way! At least I get twice as much experience that way!

A quilt book or magazines with beginner level patterns.
