Think it through with the uncut squares on a design board. Put some black and some white up against them and see which one you like best. I prefer the black with the saturated colors of jewel tones. I just did a Twister using only jewel tones and a wee touch of black.

Ooh so many neat ideas popped into my head! Carpenter's Wheel would be a good one, or simple HST's arranged in a barn-raising pattern. I found this one on the web recently and it's on my bucket list. She did it in warms vs. cools, which I love. Or, you could add white or black to set the jewel tones off and make the quilt bigger.
