Ideas Please!

1 Attachment(s)
Ok, I'm working on my DIL's mothers 3rd grandchilds quilt...a boy this time...and she wants his name on the front. My only idea is to put a border strip on top and appliqué EDUARDO VALENTINO (yes, she wants the whole name...) across it. I think that will really overpower the quilt, so would appreciate any ideas to cute it up... I hadn't planned on adding borders as it already measures 60 x 74 and this baby is just a few months old, so would only add one to the top. She wanted quilts that the kids can get a lot of years of use out of. Can't wait to see what you come up with! TIA!!

you could only make his name fit the middle two blocks. not that whole width. Or put the first name in a block and the last down in another block.....

cathyvv 03-18-2019 12:05 PM

Cute quilt. Perhaps put his name on the back in big letters?

How about a border all the way around the same width as the strips and quilt in his name all around the quilt in thread? You could use a contrasting thread so it would show up.

I Agree, putting the name on a border on this cute quilt will overpower it. I agree with cathyvv, put his name on the backing in big letters in applique. If you quilt the name in, it will read backwards on the back. So put it on the back and quilt however you were planning to.

I put the child's name on the quilt label with DOB. Add my name and date the quilt was made. Labels are attached on two corners and then binding is done. Only two sides left to hand stitch onto the quilt.

Since you are making the quilt, it is your choice about the name/label.

Hope that helps!

SuziSew 03-18-2019 12:52 PM

What about a border down the left side and the bottom in solid colors to put his name on...kind of like a shadow box or window...then it won't detract from the rest of the quilt (it's adorable by the way!)...hope that makes sense...I can see it in my head but it's hard to describe.;)

I think it would be cute to do black appliqué letters going diagonally across the quilt. Maybe a couple inches tall? I find a font I like in Word and print out the individual letters to use as a pattern.

You could do his name when quilting, and put his name in a couple of the bigger strips of a block~~

Tartan 03-18-2019 01:29 PM

If you really don’t want to add borders, I might embroider his name on one of the blocks. Cute top!

my-ty 03-18-2019 01:50 PM

Use the same blocks (modified) on the back for his name. Extending the 4 squares to equal the number of letters in the surname or first name which ever is longer. Make 2 blocks. Add a letter into each square to spell the first name (use blanks to center the name). Repeat letters in second block for surname.

Explain to the requester that you could not add these modified blocks to the top and this was the best workaround idea.

Lovely job!

Love the idwwa of name on back like a two sided quilt!! Then his name be by itself to learn later!!

Jingle 03-18-2019 02:46 PM

very pretty.

Thanks so much to all of you! You have given me a lot to think about! I would love to put his name on the back, but the grandma is very specific about wanting the name on the front. I tried to nudge her to agree to have his full name incorporated in a label on the back but that didn't hold water either. As of right now, I'm torn between Sue's shadowbox idea which would not make the quilt grow too much, or Tartans embroidery.... I so appreciate all the input!

Plee1053 03-18-2019 03:57 PM

Add a small border on both sides and embroider his first name on left and last name on right side before you quilt it.

Mkotch 03-19-2019 02:02 AM

You could put the name on the back in really large letters, like a crossword puzzle (overlapping at the A), to make the quilt reversible. Maybe she'd like that?

costumegirl 03-19-2019 04:29 AM

Recycler - If she is insistent on having the name on the front, I agree with you that possibly the shadow box idea would work well or Tartan's embroidery idea on a few blocks.
Your quilt is very cute - love the bright colours!

What a darling quilt and that's a cool name for a little boy! Having said this I have no ideas, sorry!

jmoore 03-19-2019 05:55 AM

Many have shared some wonderful ideas...I just want to say how much I like the pattern and bright fabrics you’ve added to the quilt. Great job.

luvstoquilt 03-19-2019 05:57 AM

Tartan’s idea is the best to my way of thinking. I wouldn’t want it any larger.

sue.ross.8782 03-19-2019 07:22 AM

What if the new baby boy's name is stitched into the quilt as part of the quilting? ;)

Jordan 03-19-2019 07:55 AM

Very cute quilt. I made a quilt for each of my 5 grandchildren and pieced their name on the top of the front of the quilt. Wish I could put pictures on here to show you. I got the letters from a book I had. Looks like you have a lot of ideas coming your way tho'

Kitsie 03-19-2019 08:05 AM

I like that idea!

recycler 03-19-2019 02:49 PM

Thank S so much everyone!! I'm still hem hawing...experimented a little with appliqué today which didn't go well...

BSKTLOFR-QUILTER 03-19-2019 06:17 PM

Be sure to post when you've made your decision and final product. It's a darling quilt and I can appreciate the hard spot you're in.

klswift 03-20-2019 06:43 AM

I see the two yellow strips in the center of the top going down. I would put his first name down the right side of the pure yellow strip and then the last name down the left side of the yellow orange strip below it. (First thing that jumped out at me.)

sewnclog 03-20-2019 07:22 AM

I would put his first name in the small border of the horizontal block and his last night in the bottom small border of the same block. Maybe the first blue block on the top row or the light orange block of the top row. And not in like a black either. A light gray maybe? So the letters wouldn't be Huge. Just my thoughts.

sewstephanie 03-20-2019 07:56 AM

I think this is your best bet so it does not over power the front of your lovely quilt

I would love to put the name on the back, but she specifically wants it on the front. Sigh. I'm going to try and find someone who has an embroidery machine who can embroider the name on one of the blocks as suggested previously. The quilt is on the larger side of what I wanted, so really don't want to make it bigger if I can help it. i so appreciate all the help and kind comments!

Bobbielinks 03-20-2019 02:49 PM

The quilt is very cute. But unlike most I think it would look great with the name done with black letters appliqued right on top of the colorful blocks on the front. Sewgood and I are thinking alike on this one.

ellifour 03-27-2019 02:39 PM

how about taking the center 4 blocks out of one of the blocks and replacing with a solid with his name embroidered on it

Iceblossom 03-27-2019 03:46 PM

I really like the name on the back idea, but the first idea I had was to add borders on the sides with the names spelled vertically, one on each left and right border. I think the proportions might be a bit odd to add left and right and not top and bottom but I don't think it would be awful.
