Idea's for quilting a sampler quilt
 

Hi I have 2 sampler quilts that I need to quilt. One of them is made up of 6inch blocks, I have 12 of them and 12 pinwheel blocks that I am combining with the sampler. The other is 12 inch blocks (12 of them) that I will combine with 12 very simple star blocks. What type of designs work nicely on sampler quilts? Open to all suggestions. Thank you Grace

Do you have pics you can post? There is a lot of talented quilters who will be able to help you. I have trouble deciding on quilt designs so I'll be watching this thread.

What I have personally seen is quilting each block in its own unique way like a sampler of quilting

I don't know but I am curious, too.

I did a 25 block sampler for hubby for our anniversary last year. Each block quilted individually. Some SITD, some echo, each very different. Not only was it a sampler of blocks, but the back is just as different as the front. Here is the link to the thread:

If it doesn't pick up, with the new board system, the final pics are on page 7 instead of page 5. They all look like you have to click on them. It wasn't originally set up that way. I really liked how it came out. I used pumpkin seed type shapes on some of them too, then repeated them in the border. I crossed them in the corner squares. I thought they looked like wedding rings on their sides.

Hi, Thank you for bringing my attention to the anniversay Sampler it is just beautiful. I do think I will do each block differently, I really like that idea. How did you come up with so many different quilting designs. I have quilted different pictures in each block on previous quilts I made. I would think of them as I went along. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your family.

I wanted to do more than SITD which was the only stuff I had done so far. I did some echo quilting about 1/4 inch away from the seams for some. The card trick, I literally took chalk and drew radiating diamonds coming out of the center. On the blocks with some larger rectangles, I made some melon shaped templates for the sashing and I took those and put them in the blocks too. I made some heart templates and drew them onto the top. The only regret I have is that I used orange chalk in spots and it never washed out. Everything else did. The quilting itself took about 4 1/2 months and I worked between one and two hours a night on it. I started in the center and worked my way out, and then did the sashing, corner squares, and borders last.

Thank you SOO much for the kind words. I think I might be an intermediate beginner now! I only piece and baste so I can quilt. I just got into machine quilting. I like the straight line look and some things are done faster by machine. All the quilts super close to my heart are hand quilted. I've already picked the wedding quilt pattern as the older kids are getting close to that age, and I'll probably make them all the same quilt, in their wedding colors and quilt them by hand.

I will also be making a quilt for a dear friend and her hubby who lost their home to a flood. I'm making one of the fab shop hop samplers, the neighborhood one. That's the one I'll be hand quilting next.

I would do freehand work in each of the sampler blocks to make each one its own work of art and in each of the pinwheel blocks do the same pattern such as feathers in each of the triangles or swirls, etc. I did a wall hanging size this way and I think it turned out wonderful.
