I used pre cut 12 x12 PVC Mat Board 40 for $20. Lightweight, thin, and sturdy. I used white flannel to cover. No flannel on back so they stack flat. I used spray glue to keep the flannel nice and flat on the board. Tip: spray the board and lay on flannel bigger than the board. Trim from backside with ruler and cutter. Perfectly smooth finish.

Front and back.

Thanks. Pictures are helpful.

. I agree a larger one may would be more useful. As these boards are gifts to retreaters they can take the idea and make what size they like.

The two items I use most often at my machine are snips and a purchased tomato pincushion with machine needle sizes added with a fine Sharpie marker in each section. When I need to change needle sizes I put the needle I just removed in its proper slot on the cushion. Often I am only using a specific needle for a short sewing session and it’s not ready to be discarded, so it resides in the cushion until needed again. I also use 120” tape measure a lot! I used bright red finger nail polish to paint the zero” end so I would always know which end to start with. Sewing machine needles fit any machine and would be a happy gift item as well.

Funny, I made several block boards when they first became popular and I don’t think I’ve ever used mine. Mine were made 14” using foam core, cotton batting and/or flannel and pretty colored duct tape.

my moveable design boards were my best gift to myself last year :)
I used paint boards from the craft store (Micheals here) they are often on sale for about 4 bucks each.
Laid on some glue, sloothed over batting (cotton grabs bits best), flipped over and trimmed.
Glued on some vintage ricrak, which was cute but found I'd just rather have the whole board clear.
I have about 10 and they make it so easy to lay out blocks and not get confused...the 3rd image is my sewing space in the RV

I like the washi tape around the boards because I had a lot of it I needed to use up. I started my next retreat gifts for spring retreat. Very cute and nice size pincushions. All made from different color gingham. I enjoy making small items like these between quilts. They are happy gifts to give.

Maybe these are more of a holiday gift for a loved one, but I really like these French seam pillow cases. I would splurge for some fancy fabrics and fold the finished pillow cases up in a pretty gift box, perhaps with a small, matching sachet included.
