If I don't get help--I may not have any fabric left!!

I thought I had it figured out, but no, it didn't work. Here is my problem. I have some blocks that are 9x9. I want to frame each one with 2 different colors of fabric on each side. So half of the nine inches in one color and then another color for the other half of the nine inches. I then want to put squares in each corner. The width of the fabrics will be 2 1/2. So what size do I cut everything? I know this will be easy for many of you. I have not had to figure this out before. Thanks for the help.:)

I'm going to assume that the finished size of your blocks will be 8.5" X 8.5". For me, I always prefer to start with my finished size measurements and then add .5" to each dimension. Since your four borders will also finish to 8.5" tall, they need to be cut to 9". Your border pieces are already cut to 2.5" and will finish at 2". Your corner pieces will also need to finish to 2", which means cutting them at 2.5" X 2.5".

I think if you first draw everything out with finished measurements, you will not have a problem. Make sure that all of your measurements add up in both direction. Once you are happy with your finished project design, simply add .5" to each side to account for the .25" seam allowance on all 4 sides.

hope this helped you.

It's not easy for me because I am having trouble understanding the block you want to create. When you say you have blocks that are 9x9, do you mean you are starting with squares of fabric that size?

the blocks are 9x9. I used 2 1/2 inch squares to make the blocks. Thank you planodebbie. I did try to draw it out. I just looked at my drawing and I see what I did wrong. I just had an ah ha moment and a lightbulb went off in my head. I counted the 1/4 inch seam between the two different colors as 1/2. duh!!! So glad I asked for help and got a response though or who knows how long before I would have figured it out. thanks again. Plus my computer retired. So, I am using my sons laptop now and then. Gotta get that new computer but I have been too busy.

Sustraley, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who does such things. It's all basic math, but as soon as you stick it in a quilt block my brain gets a bit inventive.

Glad you figured it out -
