...quilting book - which one would it be
which is your quilting bible on Sunday I have been invited to the stitch and craft show at shepton mallet here in the UK so they will have many fabrics to fondle and some I will buy they will also have at least one book stall so I want your recommendations on the best books from all your recommendations I can then make up a short list and purchase maybe 3 or 4 :) thanks in advance for your help and advice |
Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, compiled by Barbara Brackman.
There are no actual patterns - only illustrations. Buts it's the best reference on the planet when you need inspiration or want to find out whether or not a block is in the Public Domain. |
My Around the Block 3 book series.. they seem to be the main books to go for. I tend to make a bunch of different sampler blocks for various projects. They show lots of use
|
Thanks for those ideas
they are on the list of books to look for on SUnday |
if you like paper piecing maybe a book by Carole Doak as a lot of people seem to like her books and that is a book i am going to get next..if you go on her website she has all her books and kits listed there.

Well everyone I am back after a really long day (its 6.30pm here in the UK)
I looked at all the books and couldnt find any of the recommended ones so I didnt bother to get any as I will try the bookshop for those recommended but as I was unpacking the shopping I did find some rather stunning fat quarters (I wonder how they found their way here  ) some quilting safety pins a big 24 x 6 quilting ruler, a purple marking pen some beautiful threads some are metalics some silk and others rayon so some lovely threads that I am sure I can put to good use and last but not least to come out of the car was my birthday present while I was off helping my friend run her stall my DH went and bought me an embroidery machine and three quilting books - please remember girls he knows nothing about sewing let alone quilting but he does know of my love for books he bought three very very different kinds of books (he knows about Shellys wonderful offer for lessons) he bought be stack a new deck by Karla Alexander reversible quilts by sharon pederson and 5,500 quilt block designs by maggie malone now they may not be the best choices in the world but I do have a wonderful wonderful husband who encourages my artistic yearnings each book he chose is very different |

Patty thank you when he said he had chosen books for me I did sort of cringe rather - wondering what he might have come up with - I have know doubt she chatted up some poor woman and asked her advice I have been reading the reversible quilts one today and its fascinating - I have already fallen in love with the ideas in that book :) |
I have both of the Stack the deck books. The first one I used for my first two quilts. It was fun and easy, a great start for a beginner. The second book is more complecated and I dont care for it.
I have collected many books. Some I order online at Abe Books, they only charge $1.00 for most of them but you do have to pay shipping. Hamilton bookseller is a good source and you can get most books for around $5.00 and shipping is 3.50 for the whole order. My favorite books are Eleanor Burns because she is so in tune to detail even to the simplest ways to make piecing cuts. I buy her sampler quilt books at Joanns and use coupons for discounts. You do need a basic instruction book, which I found at Borders on the clearance rack for $5.00 Shop around, you can find some great bargains. |

Hi
I'm a new member who's been lurking for a while but this post got me to finally post a message. Just wanted to say that Stack a New Deck by Karla Alexander is one of my absolute favorite books. I've made two of the quilts from that book and have recommended it to several friends. And it's a great book for beginners who aren't yet comfortable with quarter-inch seams, because you sew the pieces together and then trim the whole block to size at the end. Your husband did a great job! I'm attaching a picture of one of the quilts I made from this book. Happy belated birthday! charity quilt made with the Red Onion pattern from Stack a New Deck by Karla Alexander |
waldosmom - that is a BEAUTIFUL quilt! i love the colors! i'm going to have to check out that book!

I think this forum could get addictive... :) |
Those quilts are amazing - thank you so much for sharing them with me
its so inspiring to see things people have made from a book I am lucky enough to own I have now read the book from cover to cover I have some lovely fabric and I was all ready to make a quilt for a baby and had an idea NOW I have to many ideas and just cant get started :) I think I might end up putting all the names of the things I like and have enough fabric for into a hat and pulling out one and then just start it - you all know that saying I used to be indecisive and now I am not sure (well I am now very sure it was written with me and quilting in mind  ) |
