If you are coming here, PM me. We can meet. There are two other nice quilt shops here also. One you have to pass by as you come and is after Mardens and the other is right in town. She is moving to a new shop in a couple of weeks and it is going to be wonderful.

By far, in my honest opinion the best one is at Ellsworth.

hockeymom 04-27-2011 07:08 AM

Yes, I have been to Marden's. There is also a store in Lewiston, Me which is about 4 hours from Connecticut. Which is closer than Sanford.

anicra 04-27-2011 07:22 AM

I used to live in southern Maine and I used Marden's all the time. Over the years, the price has gone up on the fabric - you wouldn't believe how cheap it was years ago. I don't know if they still do - but they used to be VERY generous when they cut the fabric. I was very spoiled and when I moved back to NJ, it was tough to get used to Joann's giving you no more than one extra thread when they cut their material. I'm heading back up to Ogunquit in July and plan to make Marden's one of my stops!

QuilterDawg 04-27-2011 07:42 AM

I've seen wide backings there, but not a big selection. It's kind of a hit or miss thing, but the prices are great and the place is wonderful!!!!

mimee4 04-27-2011 07:50 AM

Looked up their website. I've always wanted to go to Maine and this just may be a reason to make a trip. Thanks for the info.

mimistutz 04-27-2011 08:36 AM

We're headed to Maine in August. From the looks of thier webpage, I shouldn't have any trouble finding one near where we're going, maybe even a couple. Hooray!!!

Roberta 04-27-2011 11:03 AM

I live just one town away so I shop the Waterville Marden's all the time. It's quilt shop quality material for greatly reduced prices. I don't think I could have taken up quilting without the local Marden's store.

Nathan's Mimi 04-27-2011 01:01 PM

Hello Fellow quilting friend! I live a half hour away from the Waterville,Me Mardens and I have to tell you I shop there ALL the time. 99% of the time I find their fabric to better quality than Joann's(which is right down the street from Mardens) and I can buy 3 times as much as I can elsewhere! Anyone who comes to Maine really should make sure they stop there for fabric!

Nathan's Mimi 04-27-2011 01:03 PM

No they don't sell on line thats the only bunner!

Their website says this in regards to their fabric:

“Fabric: To Marden’s fabric team, fabric is not just material. Fabric represents friendship, community and a way of life. From our fabric buyer and distribution employees right through to the associates in store that help customers one on one, hundreds of times a day, we love fabric!”

We shop for fabric 108” wide to back our quilts in just one solid piece of fabric. Most 108” wide fabric, 100% cotton, at Marden’s sells for $7.99 a yard. Although I just bought one fabric that I just love, 108” wide for just $4.99 a yard! I live in Laconia NH, but it is well worth the trip to shop and stock-up on fabric.

Do you know if they sell on line?

They aren't as generous in their cuts as they used to be, but still no complaints here. I frequent any Mardens every chance I get. Am looking to introducing my dear friend from Washington State to Mardens when she comes this summer. I got some lovely Waverly fabric there also for my porch curtains I am going to be making.

kanakama 04-27-2011 01:50 PM

I live about 1 1/2 hrs away from the Sanford store and go there 2-3 times a year. If you're looking for something specific, it's hit or miss. I usually go for backings - at 2.99 or 3.99 a yard, you can't go wrong! They are generous with their cutting and have given discounts on fabric used for project Linus and for guilds if you have 5 or more people.

NUTMEG10 04-27-2011 02:19 PM

Yes I have been to Mardens in Sanford. Love the store, it has some great buys and large, neat selection of good quality fabric. It should be on everyones to do list if they are in Maine.

Carol W 04-27-2011 02:33 PM

I live about 20 miles from the Waterville Marden's. I have a sewing room and my closet and the floor of my closet is filled with fabric. I would guess about 85% if it is from Marden's in Waterville.

I love love love Marden's. Quality fabric.

I was very happy to read that there are a lot of Maine quilters on The Quilter's Message Board!!!

memereof8 04-27-2011 03:20 PM

I've visited two of their stores. Great and the store cutters have always been generious. No complaints.

Depending on the person cutting, the generosity can be up to 1/2 a yard!! it could also be 5"!!

JAK 04-27-2011 03:50 PM

Marden's is where I buy 95% of my fabric. They also have another Marden's located in Scarborough (just down the street from the Maine Mall in South Portland). Can't beat their prices.

BarbZ 04-27-2011 05:48 PM

I LOVE MARDEN'S.!!! GO MOSTLY TO THE ONE IN WATERVILLE. HAVE BEEN TO THE ELLSWORTH AND AUBURN AND SCARBORO ONES AND ALL ARE GREAT!!!!! Can't beat their prices. They have good yarn prices also. WHAT A GOOD IDEA!!!! Now to try to get it together. LOL

whinnytoo 04-28-2011 09:27 AM

well, for instance, what if we say May 21st, Waterville Mardens, noontime? or is another date/location better?

Im not sure where most of us 'mainers' live who are on this board........ lets hear ideas from others. This will be fun!

patchitpat 04-28-2011 10:51 AM

Anytime works with me as long as it is not before May 8th. Thats my daughters wedding day and I'm tied up till then :)
Maybe we can all meet at Pizza hut as it would be easier to find each other, they have a buffet at lunchtime and they have large tables to put together? Just a thought. I'd love to get more than 6 of us and get the 20% off but if we had 12 would we get 40% hahahaha dreamin again ``````````````````

Floralfab 04-28-2011 11:18 AM

I love Mardens. I heard about the store from a quilting friend several years ago. I live in MA and we usually go up to Maine twice a year and I always stock up on fabric at Mardens. Such good prices and the fabric is name brands. I also got two good quality jackets there for $12.00/ea.

You sure you don't want to meet in Houlton or Presque Isle? Just kidding. I'll be watching for place/date/time & hope that it works for me.

whinnytoo 04-28-2011 12:55 PM

That would be a stretch for me, but it might work for the gals in that area?
Im open to Waterville, Ellsworth, Brewer, Lewiston or Scarborough

LOL now your getting greedy. :P

BarbZ 04-28-2011 01:27 PM

It will be hard to get everyone together but if we say we can do it every 4 or 5 weeks, then if someone can't make it to one they might the other time and so on. I think it would be a great idea.

MisDixie 04-28-2011 01:54 PM

When I go to New Brunswick, Canada we go over to Maine and Marden's is the best place to go for fabric. Love it!!

Peggy Payson 04-28-2011 03:19 PM

I live in Lisbon and Watervile or anyplace not to far north is good for me!!! My grandaughter lives in Ellsworth so Brewer, Ellsworth, or any other ones south of these would be good for me.

Peggy

I love Marden's. They do not sell on line. They are a Maine chain and buy surplus but also have good suppliers for things like fabric. They sell everything from soup to nuts, furniture, clothing, dishes the list goes on & on. You never know what you will find at a Mardens.
I stock up and bring fabric south in the winter as it is so expensive down here. Headed back to Maine tomorrow. Mardens here I come.

That's a good idea, and maybe we could vary the location too so more people could join us and not have to go too far.

Hey bucksprt: the sun is shining, the grass is greener, daffs are blooming and it's spring finally. Have a good trip back. Barb

Marvelous store with many name brand fabrics. Their fabric department is growing each year.

Scissorman 05-02-2011 06:51 PM

Yes, I've been to Mardens many times. They happen to be a very good drapery lining account of mine. A couple of years ago, they made the decision to really enlarge their fabric department in all their stores. If you're looking for bargains, definitely make Mardens one of your stops when visiting Maine, and be prepared to spend some time there.
