My 6th grade sewing teacher would tell us that sewing with a machine is a lot like driving a car. There's the gas pedal, you steer with your hands, etc... She even made us take a test to get our "driver's" (sewing) license before we were allowed to make projects on the machines.
So now I'm wondering if my sewing machine were a car, what kind of car would it be? Something fancy and fast? Something big and strong? A muscle car? Something cutting edge or a classic? Well, my Singer Diana I believe is from 1973. She still runs great without question, but is not fancy at all. It's just dependable and simple. One of those cars that get you from point A to point B. So, what kind of machine do you drive? |
I have a indy stock car! zero to 60 in 2 seconds!
|
To celebrate my last child graduation from college I bought a Cadallic (much cheaper then college) for myself. I don't want to drive anything else from now on except a nice luxury car but my machines are vintage Singers and a compact lightweight Janome for travel so I guess they would be Model A's and a Volkswagen.
|
I've got a Rolls Royce, a Saturn and a Dodge Dart. :>
|
I drive a 2011 GMC pickup with all the frills you can get. Drives like a cadillac but I drive a singer 66-1 treadle for working on quilts. The machine was made in 1916. Glenn

I've got an old reliable VW Bug (198X Kenmore), a Land Rover (H-Viking - they go through everything!), and a sexy but finicky Italian sports car (Janome MC6500).

An Oldsmobile - work horse reliable Singer.
|
oh my this is fun!
I have the trusty reliable Oldsmobile(Bernina 830 REcord), the sleek, modern and fun Alpha Romeo(Elna quilter's dream) the sporty, yet reliable and versatile Suburu forester (Janome gem silver) and many more classics! |
mine would have to be a race car janome
|
Pat says the Babylock would be a luxury sedan like a Lexus. The Pfaff is more like an older Audi.
|
well... we Do have a model A in our garage, which would be my featherweight. And then there's the horse & buggy that I don't actually own, which would be my gr'ma's treadle (which I've never used). And then there's my, ummm,,, gee - I'm so not a car person,,, a camry? maybe? which would be my bernina 160 - which is a totally reliable, hardworking, get-you-there-in-one-piece kind of machine. She has a great personality and she's quite patient with me.

My minivan is on the dining room table. The porche is in the basement. The Bentley is in the livingroom, and the white T-bird, well she's in the hall, but she just arrived today so I haven't decided on a parking spot for her yet!

My Elna is very much like my Buick LeSabres. Trusty, hard working, reliable and not very stylish. Though my 'new' Buick has way too many bells and whistles.
My 1952 Singer 128 has a shuttle so I look at her like a Model A. My 1956 Singer 301A - a classic Chevolet BelAir. My Kenmore - a used up old Ford - she did well in her day, but had tension problems like my Fords had door problems. My Singer serger - a piece of junk. I won't insult anyone's car with a comparison. Interesting question!!! |
I think my Babylock is a Honda Accord....nice features, smooth ride, reliable. My serger would be more along the lines of a Geo Metro. Inexpensive, no frills but gets the job done.
|
Mercedes Benz (mighty Brother)
|
I have a few machines but my "Go to" machine is a Pfaff 138 industrial. He is a Kenworth 18 wheeler. My Featherweight is a Mini Cooper and my Brother PC6500 Embroidery Machine is a Chevy Van.
|
I got a Putt-Putt Car (volkswagen) or a Brother XL2600. It just putts right along. Someday I am going to have a Jaguar. (Even if I have to just paint it to look like one. LOL)

Guess I have a horse and cart (treadle) and a lovely classic Jaguar (Pinnock) and whatever was generic, plastic and boring in the 80's (1980's Kmart Singer).
|
Mine is the VW New Beetle! A little plain, rather curvy, with just enough features to be interesting but not overwhelming. Starts everyday, runs smooth, can be pretty zippy when you need it to, handles tight curves well and is fun fun fun to drive!
|
A plane Jane old singer that that works good.
|
Mine is a Mazarati! Got all the bells and whistles and flies! It's an Ellisimo.
(I was a racer in a previous life {well some say I still am} and my theme song is "I Can't Drive 55" by Sammy Hagar! Except when I have my grandbaby with me that is! Then I am a real granny! |
I too drive a Mercede Benz (Brother) and have a stand-by one roughly 35 yrs old that needs a new cord. I also have use of DH's embroidery machine, but don't embroider on it. He's more into that aspect of things. That would be our Thunderbird IMO. He liked it until I got my new computerized Brother. Now he has me set up mine for him! My serger (also Brother) is a Boxster and I love it too.

PS, this has the funniest and most FUN thread yet! |
my husband said not to forget what we call his 1960's White...it is fondly referred to as "the BUICK"...it is like a copper toned beige with lots of heavy duty chrome...the day I found it, I picked up and said, it not only looks like Buick, it feels like one...dang is it heavy!

:( I don't understand cars well enough to play. Tho I do like comparing FWs to MiniCoopers. I have 3FWs and think MiniCoopers are too cute. But my FWs are practical for my lifestyle and the MiniCooper is not! Maybe my Bernina 930 is an old Land Rover? But what's a Babylock Quest Plus? It's long, fast, precise, and well-equipped. What's a Brother HS 2000?
|
I'd have to say Honda (they just keep going, like my 15-year old Bernina that I still love), a Volkswagen (I liked that description for the Janome Jem for travel) and last but not least, in our FL condo, I have a station wagon. Old, basic, not the greatest but okay for when you need it!
|
I drive a variety of machines(alot more than the ones in the garage) My first nice machine Bernina 170 cost more than my first car - alot more.Haha My classic is my featherweight. The old faithful is my grandmothers 1950 Singer. The horse and buggies or my crank White and treadle. My regular ride that works day and night - thru rain, sleet and snow is my newer Bernina my Rolls.

At the time i bought my machine it was a Lexus, now it's older it would be a older car that runs like a clock.

My sewing machine, a 1964 Featherweight, is very much like my 1999 Ford Ranger pick up.
They're both older and have a lot of miles on them. Neither is big or fancy, but they are both very reliable and require little more than oil and electricity (or gas in the case of the Ranger) to keep them humming along. :-D Lori |
