Dreaming 01-15-2011 12:33 PM

I remember being out and abouts with my mom shopping, and there would be times she would see some fabric and drool over it. I would look at her and say "whatever mom". I didn't understand how she could think a piece of fabic was gorgeous. I don't know really how it happened, but we drool together now. Thank God!!!

Words are calorie free, quilting is so much fun, thank the neighbor and be a "poor" quilter having way too much fun.
Thanks for the laugh.

mimom 01-15-2011 01:14 PM

do you find yourself looking at something (non-quilt related) to buy that you dont really have to have and saying to yourself "I could buy alot fabric for what that would cost". If you do your an addict. I havent had my hair cut in about 6 months, lol

Cassews 01-15-2011 01:29 PM

My mother was a fantastic seamstress & with 3 girls she stayed busy making clothing for us. Your quote reminded me of her after all 3 of her girls took to quilting & became addicted, "That's the supidest thing I've ever heard of, cutting a perfectly good piece of fabric into little pieces & then SEWING IT BACK TOGETHER". Once she decided she was going to make a quilt top for each of us & she chose the "Lone Star" pattern, made her cardboard template & used it to mark about a zillion diamond shapes & then cut them out. Well, needless to say as she progressed her template shrank & by the time I received my quilt top it had 9 (yep,9) star points.

Well. a year and a half later, numerous rulers, 3 cutting mats, several rotary cutters, numerous books, special iron, quilt wall, boxes of thread, several gadgets, new sewing machine and special feet, and even two boxes of scraps and a little fabric (ha) I am so addicted, and so broke I don't know whether to love or hate my neighbor. Yep, my dear departed neighbor came back from winter in Fla with patterns for place mats and DRAGGED me to Joanns for fabric to make some for myself. She got me hooked. I couldn't believe I would get so deeply entrenched in this craft, hobby, or whatever you call it. I never thought I would quilt. I always said quilting was like watching paint dry. Sew a straight seam here, a straight seam there.... Well, I am hooked!!!! Big time

Congratulations and welcome to the club! I, too, grew up with a mom who both sewed and quilted. I let her teach me to embroidery but that was my limit. Now, many years later, I have the quilting bug so bad that my dh and my dd's give me limits on how many ufo's I can have and still buy more fabric. Which is good, or I would be a compulsive fabriholic and have projects stacked up all over the house! This board is kind of like a QA meeting, only we're not trying to recover, we're here to encourage each other to keep quilting! How fun is that?!

Welcome to the club!!! We're a great group and use our addiction for good, not evil!!!!

penski 01-15-2011 04:25 PM

i cant think of anything better to stash away than fabrics!!!

fabricmaniac 01-15-2011 04:58 PM

Is there a better type of insanity??? I don't think so!!

Lucy90 01-15-2011 05:55 PM

I always liked to sew but made clothes, curtains, covers for toasters, mixers etc. Then I didn't sew much. Well my cousin said, you should try quilting and she had a huge stash and I just thought how stupid to have all that material. Well I started quilting with her guidance and now am a full blooded quilter. I have a stash not as large as hers was but now I understand why. You just need to have that material incase a quilt pattern comes up for it!

patdesign 01-15-2011 06:54 PM

I actually have sewn since I was about 6, but for alsmost 25 years I was so busy that I only touched my machine when I had to mend and hated even that. Happily I have a renewed passion for sewing and love quilting,at 72 I hope I still have a few more years to keep on quilting. Sometimes we just need a break I guess, however my sewing room now runneth over!!

I can identify with amandsgramma. I gave away all my crafting supplies also all my paints and brushes to make room for my quilting. My daughter now has all my crafting and painting supplies. She is very talented in both areas so they didn't go to waste. I took up the two end rooms of our 14X80 mobile home for my quilting and fabric stash. Still don't have enough room.lol

Katz13203 01-15-2011 08:29 PM

LOL!

fabricfairy 01-15-2011 08:54 PM

I teach a little an always ask if we have a new quilter in the group, I then explain this is an addict habit and there is no curer for it ( I have asked my Dr. who just laugh at me), I dont even look at scrapebooking as I know I would get into that and want everything to go with it . Cathy

Sandra in Minnesota 01-15-2011 09:03 PM

I agree with Diana Lynne- I also hated sewing and still do, but quilting is different, and I refuse to go to rehab!

Annz 01-15-2011 09:42 PM

Hee hee hee It sounds like me.

katigirl 01-16-2011 12:06 AM

Good job of munching on them. lol.

rona thickpenny 01-16-2011 12:08 AM

Ah --- but what a wonderful way to be broke .

tuxedokitty 01-16-2011 02:21 AM

And don't look for help fighting that addiction here! We are all a bunch of "enablers" :)) Seeing beautiful new fabric coming home with me ALWAYS gives me that smile!

I tried scrapbooking a few years ago. I had so much scrap (remove the s...) and it takes up so much space just to spread it out. I finally gave up on that and sold the whole kit and kaboodle at a yard sale. I was thrilled and so was the lady who bought it. I don't bother asking my Dr about the habit, because his wife quilts, and his daughter works in the garment district in NY in a design studio. So he knows. I made a baby quilt last year for his nurse. When he saw it, he said it was way beyond what his wife does. Made me happy.

Consider it an investment... In what I don't know, but we must be invested in something

pojo 01-16-2011 05:17 AM

You joined the right group to collect fabric.
welcome aboard.

Gabrielle's Mimi 01-16-2011 09:42 AM

Here is a chuckle for you:
I used to do scrapbooking, card-making, calligraphy, etc. I gave most of it up because I am enthralled with quilting. One of my sons said, "It's great that you've given up scrapbooking...that was such an expensive hobby for you." If he only knew!!!!

Fabricnut 01-16-2011 11:07 AM

I agree with quilting keeping us our of bars, but must add that it keeps me out of the casinos also. There isn't much for entertainment where I live but since I started quilting I haven't been to the casinos except to eat once. I figure $20 in fabric can last forever but $20 in a casino can be lost in 5 minutes/forever.

sewer 55 01-16-2011 12:43 PM

Oh! how I chuckled (actually laughed out loud) when I read your story. I can just see myself! I used to do many kinds of crafts and sewed garments for years. Am now in the process of getting rid of the craft stuff and building a fabric stash for quilting. As I am writing this, I should be in the bedroom organizing my stash. My space is so limited, but I just can't pass up a beautiful piece of fabric. Stay out of quilt shops? How??? Hubby is not a real happy camper, but he'll live through it.

sewgarden 01-16-2011 01:57 PM

We could all have worse addictions and probably more expensive ones. At least we wont harm anyone else with this one

Oh, I love that!!. Next time DH mentions my quilting addiction, I will let him know if I didn't do that, I would be hanging out at bars. hehehehe

Out of the bars & off the streets......... (anywhere else)?

kateyb 01-16-2011 09:55 PM

My 10 siblings think I'm crazy or eccentric. However, they have all asked for a quilt.
Hubby doesn't mind my addiction. He pretty much knows where he can find me - in my sewing room.
I see quilting as an investment in my sanity. It feeds my creative soul, lowers my stress and makes me happy.

So well said, kateyb. It's so nice to hear those feelings from somebody else.
My quilting saved my sanity at the lowest points in my life. When my daughter died from a head injury 7 yrs ago & when my mother died & my husb. died (of a massive stroke) within wks. of ea. other 2 yrs. ago. I really lost it for awhile but my quilting got me through somehow. I cried my way through many stitches.
Just reading how obsessed you all are with quilting lets me know it isn't just me. I guess I'm all right after all. Spending so much time on here with all of you shores me up during some very lonely times.
Please don't anybody be sad by my story. Let's just go to our sewing machines & make something pretty that will make us happy.

sewgarden 01-16-2011 11:14 PM

So sorry for your losses but happy that your addiction helped to see you through it all. I can understand how that was so.

Love your avatar, and your story is so touching. Glad you are doing OK

4girlsmimi 01-17-2011 05:58 AM

My husband never has to wonder where I am, he just wonders if I'm ever coming out of my sewing room. Happy quilting!

Fabricnut 01-17-2011 09:42 AM

I love your avatar picture. I once had a wallhanging like it in pink but must have sold it in a garage sale. Of course that was before I started quilting. Now I wish I had a pattern for it. Guess I didn't appreciate all the work that had gone into it.

Rann 01-17-2011 01:04 PM

I got rid of boxes of scraps, dumbly thinking I would never use them, just before I got into quilting. Dumb, dumb, dumb
