I'm Confused!
 

I'm in the process of making the quilt below. I've sewn the fat quarters together, right sides on all four edges, facing together. Then I cut them on the diagonal as directed and cut them into HSTs. Here is where I'm confused. I have fabric on the back, so is thatbwhatnthe back of the quilt will be, instead of maybe a solid color? Also, how do I sew the HSTs together when they are right sides up instead of right sides facing each other?

Now, I'm confused! Did you use fat quarters instead of 10" squares? If you squared up the fat quarters, this would work but be larger. Sounds also like something is wrong because everything should have be right sides up, I think. Are you sure you linked the correct pattern for us to look at?

It was actually a layer cake I used.

Were you able to get 4 HSTs out of each set of 2 pieces of fabric after sewn together?

You take one layer cake square light and put it together with a dark square right sides together. Sew all the way around. Cut on the diagonal both ways.
When you cut from corner to corner you ended up with 4 triangles that you opened up to make 4 squares. You put the 4 squares together with the dark in and made a 12 1/2 inch square.
Did you get that part?

Did you place the squares right sides together before you sewed them on all four sides? It sounds like you had a right side of a square against a wrong side. You can save your blocks but you are going to have to rip out the seams and resew the HST together making sure you have right sides together

This may be silly, but a HST is not a triangle, it's a square made out of 2 triangles. So after you sew areound the edges, and cut on the diagonal, you open up the cut pieces, press the seams and you get four squares, each of which is called a HST. So sorry if I just restated the obvious.

Sometime we just need to walk away from a project for awhile. If I read the directions wrong the first time I keep reading them wrong. Put it aside for another day then I bet you will be able to understand it with no problem. I know this from experience. Good Luck with your project.

Did you do this process with your backing material? That should be left whole.
