I'm in love with Glide Thread but........
 

In a recent post, I asked for the opinions on different threads for long arm machines. Several of you recommended the Glide threads. I ordered some and tried it. I have to say that I love it! It has made such a difference in my quilting. the only thing that I don't like about it is the little plastic cones that it comes on. I have had an issue with the thread coming off the spool so fast that it makes big loops around the bottom of the spool holder and when it tights up, breaks the thread. Has anyone ever had that problem? Or is it just me???

The bottom of the spool pops off a bit so that you can wind your thread around it for storage. Check and make certain that the bottom is popped back on completely. I'm thinking it might be catching. I love the Glide thread as well but it is rather slick and that is the reason it comes off the spool so fast.

I have never had this problem and use Glide almost exclusively. I LOVE the magnaglide bobbins, they are definitely worth the small extra expense.

With it coming off the cone so fast as you are quilting that is unusual. You shoud try to find one of those cone socks made out of mesh material. It is more commonly used with monofiliment thread.

I believe it also helps to put something under the cone. I have a round cushion of foam that sits on my spool holder. Having the bottom of the spool connect with the foam helps prevent thread from winding around underneath the spool.

I am loving Glide too, but have not used a smaller spool yet. Just finished a quilt with the large spool (and the foam cushion) and had no problem with thread catching. Noticed it does tend to pop out of the last thread guide near the needle, though.

Using a thread net should stop the problem also. Just be careful about net quality. I bought some thread nets in a small package for my serger, and they are soft and wonderful. Bought a length of thread net off Amazon (you cut off the length you need), and I noticed it's coarse and stiff. I don't think it will work as well as the soft stuff. It won't go to waste, though, as I will use it to keep Christmas and other paper rolls in check. Will work much better than rubber bands, which tend to get brittle over time and can mark the paper.

Prism, I think you are right on both accounts. I too have the foam pad that my cones sit on and I also have never tried the glide on the little spool. I only ordered the big cones. Maybe it is the little spools that are a problem combined with the lack of foam pad.

Where do you all get your Glide thread from? I've been wanting to try it, but haven't found a place around here that sells it yet. I suppose I'll need an online source.
