I'm Quilting, But Now I Want to Piece

I always have several projects going at the same time and I think that I know why. Every time I'm in the final stages of completing a quilt, (as in quilting it,) I want to do piecing instead. It happens every time. Maybe it's because I really like piecing, but as for quilting, not so much.

Homespun 02-18-2021 07:32 AM

I piece for several weeks, then get busy and quilt them.

MicheleC 02-18-2021 07:44 AM

I am having trouble finishing a quilt right now due to this. I think I finally put my finger on why I am not as enthusiastic about quilting part of the time. I like the process. Completing the quilt is a joy but it’s more laborious than piecing and makes me tired faster.

QuiltingVagabond 02-18-2021 07:46 AM

Same here, the actual quilting process is hard for me.

tropit 02-18-2021 07:53 AM

Yeah...I think you guys are on to something. My shoulders just ache terribly when I'm quilting, due to having to manhandle these giant quilts.

petthefabric 02-18-2021 08:03 AM

I like the creative process. My mind is engaged. Quilting, to me, is drudgery. I think about how much I'll like having it finished.

pocoellie 02-18-2021 08:11 AM

I also usually have 4 or 5 tops ready to quilt, then get busy and get them quilted, then make more tops, sometimes I'll be basting one top and working on quilting, or making another top, but to do that, I need to have everything cut out.

juliasb 02-18-2021 08:36 AM

Right now I am on a piecing rage! I know why. I have an accuquilt and have been putting together quilts right and left. My quilting machine is down right now. That doesn't help either. I have 11 tops made and working on another one. I feel your fingers.

Tartan 02-18-2021 08:56 AM

Occasionally I will have a quilt that pieces and quilts perfectly. It makes me reluctant to finish it since my work so seldom goes well through the whole process.

sewingsuz 02-18-2021 09:06 AM

I am quilting now also and I do not like this process. My FMQ is not good and I don't even want to stop and practice. I have three to quilt and then I can build some more or go on to smaller projects.

Irishrose2 02-18-2021 09:59 AM

My hands have been sore lately, so I find it helpful to combine quilting and piecing. Piecing isn't painful, but it won't get my baby quilts delivered. One baby quilt being FMQ, one at build a back stage and a wedding quilt in early piecing stage. Another wedding quilt in planning stages.

You need another machine so you switch out between tasks. I get restless with the quilting process too.

Jingle 02-18-2021 04:54 PM

I love all aspects of quilt making. I do have a large double bed top to quilt. Since I have way too many quilts for one bed it can wait.

I am now making quilts again for donation. Mine can wait.

Are all the above reasons why we have UOFs?
Same with me. Get to a certain part on a quilt...no...wait....see that pattern...see that fabric...UFO created...again. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/frown.png

I love piecing, the sandwiching and quilting part not so much. I will quilt small items but bigger than a baby quilter I quilt by check.

SusieQOH 02-19-2021 05:31 AM

tropit, I'm the same way! I'm not that great at machine quilting and I hate doing the sandwiching part.

sewingpup 02-19-2021 07:20 AM

I go in spurts. There are things I like, picking out the fabric cutting, and doing the block piecing. and things I don't like, stitching the rows together especially if it is a Big quilt, adding on borders. Then to the quilting part, Things I don't like, piecing the backing together, getting everything square and lined up to put on the long-arm, going up to the attic to get the batting cut off the roll (I use my stairs as a pantry as I have a tiny kitchen so have to clear everything off the stairs first) loading the quilt unto the longarm. Then I get to something that is fun as I do a quick and easy over-all design free hand on the quilt. Then back to the things I don't like, off loading the quilt and trimming the sides, making the binding and machine stitching it on. Oh and I did I mention I seldom put a label on it cuz I don't like that step either...oh my, I need an apprentice!

I have two machines set up all the time. One for piecing and one for FMQ. My apparel machine can be utilized quickly. Works for me.

dmo 02-19-2021 01:27 PM

I love the piecing, but really struggle with finding time to sandwich and finish. Its more fun to put together the patterns.

Macybaby 02-20-2021 04:14 AM

well, I have an LA - and I still have this problem! I simply love to piece.

lindaschipper 02-20-2021 04:52 AM

My quilting machine went in the shop yesterday....again! If I were quilting large bed quilts I'd be in trouble, but since I mainly do children's quilts and throws, I can finish them on my DSM. Still, after a couple days of piecing my lower back feels like I've been stuck with an ice pick. Then I do some cross stitch and relax.

Patg 02-22-2021 06:52 AM

I love both, I hand quilt, hand piece, my favorite things to do. Of course I machine piece, but love hand piecing more, but since I can't sit on my behind ALL day, I sew at my machine, among other things so I don't sit all day.

I much prefer to piece than quilt, even though I have a mid arm.
I usually pick away at a quilt always set up on my mid arm while I piece on my domestic. I get a lot more piecing done, as evidenced by the bags of tops I have ready to be quilted.
I had decided not to go the long arm route, but my shoulders are beginning to ache while quilting, so may end up getting a small table long arm. Perhaps that will make me want to quilt more?

I do QAYG, so I don’t have large pieces to work on. I like that I can quilt each block the same or different, and having a beautiful back as well. I don’t mind sewing the blocks together as that works up pretty quickly

Love your quilts, especially the second one.

Thank you. That is the front of the first one, beautiful on both sides!

You are not the only one. I think that is why many of us have all these unfinnished tops or blocks.
