DH and I decided to go out on the highway 70 yard sale today, even though it is the last day of the 3-day sale. This is a yard sale that runs all the way from Memphis to Nashville all along highway 70. Well I am so happy I went, the first place we stopped was an estate sale, rather than a yard sale, and they had almost nothing left but just a few odds and ends in the yard, but then I saw a sign that said furniture in the house. Well, the last thing I need is furniture, but I found my self saying can I go in and look around? Guess what I found......it's not a feather weight, but it is a vintage Singer model 66-18. I got it in the cabinet for $15 and it runs too! Now DH and I have the project of getting it cleaned up and making sure everything is in tip top shape. Oh yeah I also found a vintage quilt top for $3.00. I take pictures tomorrow and post. :-D :-D :-D

Woohoo! Oh I would love to do this sale. Have heard about it. Would have to bring an enclosed trailer though. May find something I don't need, can't live wothout, just have to have.

I am sure glad you got to go. I have set here with my two grandchildren wishing I could go. My youngest son called this morning and said he was thinking about me as he was on 70 and both sides of the road were covered with sales. He knows how much enjoyment I get out of it. But my granddaughter is very heat sensitive and I can't get her out in the sun. She is on an immune suppressant. Maybe next year or the 461 that goes from I-40 to Big Sandy.

Here is the update folks. I believe what I bought was a Godzilla. It is model number 66-18 and serial number AL039395 so from what I can find it is a heavy duty machine produce around 1950. It did come with the manual, one pressure foot, the foot pedal, and some bobbins. The quilt top is in pretty good shape two small holes, and I did find one spot where a seam is coming apart. Other than that it all seems to be intact.

what wonderful finds!!

Melinda in Tulsa 06-13-2010 08:06 AM

Woo hoo! What a nice find. I myself have never been lucky enough to find sewing/quilting things at yard sales. Yesterday my BFF called me and said she bought me something at a yard sale, it was a large box of fabric, mixed content but still lots of cottons, for only $2. I won't be able to pick it up from her until next weeek but I'm thrilled. She is an avid yard saler and keeps an eye out for me for cheap fabric.

littlehud 06-13-2010 08:16 AM

I found a Singer 66 in a cabinet at an estate sale last month (not a godzilla). I plan on cleaning mine with Billy's tutorial. Look under tutorials - how to disassemble, clean, repair vintage singer machines. It is an awesome tutorial! Good luck.

Sounds like the machine and top were waiting for you to come.
So glad you found them. Enjoy them.

(Billy does have some good tutorials on how to clean up these vintage machines.)

Yes I am going to quilt the top. There is one block with two little bitty holes and one seam that is coming apart. I can fix the seam. Not sure about the holes. Should I mend them, or just leave them alone?

I don't think they knew what they had, becuase they had another older machine that was nothing to look at (and the motor was seized up) sitting out for display. This one was all closed up, and pushed back in the corner of the room.

Cathie_R 06-15-2010 09:28 AM

Wonderful top. That beats my $4.00 top I found last week. I've already posted pictures of it earlier. I don't think mine is in as good a condition as yours. Do you know what the pattern is? I'm sure I've seen it before.
