I machine quilted a top a while back and have just started to hand quilt it. I layered it, basted it and have quite a bit of it quilted. Horror! Part of a seam is coming apart. It's in a place That I was not going to quilt and it has frayed so bad that I can't seem to sew it back together. Any suggestions would be appreciated. By the way I'm a new quilter.

Depending on what the blocks look like I would applique something over it. What design is it??

bearisgray 05-13-2010 07:30 AM

If one block frayed, other places you've used that same fabric might also have issues.

Applique covers many problems. If you put several on the top, it will look like you meant it as a design feature.

My mom would applique butterflies all over my clothes when I was a kid.

It's a ladder quilt with very modern material for my daughter. I can't think of anything that I could applique over it that would not look bad.

Scissor Queen 05-13-2010 07:38 AM

Wonder Under. Peel it off the backing and tuck it under the seam and fuse it. To make it permanant steam it.

karendenice 05-13-2010 07:55 AM

Thank you so very much! It's toward the center so I will have to take out quite a bit of quilting . But it will be worth the effort. My daughter just loves it. (But she does not know that it is her Christmas present). I will go right away and buy some wonder under

Just a note of what may work to applique over it if the wonderunder doesn't work, CIRCLE. My guess would be that the straight lines of the ladder design would look great with some "random" appliqued circles added for contrast. That being said, I hope the wonderunder works for you!

You may not have to take out any quilting. Cut real small pieces of wonder under and tuck into the seam with something like a Purple Thang or a stilleto.

Hope the wonder under works ! Keeping fingers crossed for you

bearisgray 05-13-2010 08:22 AM

do you have pictures?

Minda 05-13-2010 08:25 AM

I would like to second the circle suggestion. My daughter appliques circles on quilts often (just because she likes circles), and they really add so much dimension.

Marjpf 05-13-2010 08:37 AM

I know this will sound like the ultimate sin, but I had a baby quilt do that the day before the shower. I used "okay to wash it" glue. Put it on a toothpick and ran a line down every seam. Never did hear if it fell apart later, though.

karendenice 05-13-2010 08:41 AM

 What is a Purple Thang? Too old for stilettoes! Maybe a small knitting needle would work. I will definitly try it. And the circles are a good idea too. I just don't think I have enough matching fabric to do more than the binding.

karendenice 05-13-2010 08:53 AM

:( No pictures. Don't have the tools to take any.

Purple Thang, http://www.clotilde.com/detail.html?...riteria=purple

There's also a stiletto at the bottom of the page.

karendenice 05-13-2010 09:00 AM

The material is all the same kind. Ihate to think of it coming apart in other places. But if the wonderunder and the fray check works I will at least have some extra to fix them. BTW thanks for all of the suggestions. I just love this board. :D I found out about it from the How-To-Quilt newsletter.

karendenice 05-13-2010 09:04 AM

I definitly get one of those. And I LOVE the name. I need to invent something and think of a great name like that.

purplemem 05-13-2010 04:52 PM

I've used invisible thread on frays, sewing "in the ditch" over the fraying. You can't see it and it leaves an extra layer to keep it together.

littlehud 05-13-2010 05:34 PM

I hope the wonder under works. Keep us posted.

jacee kay 05-13-2010 07:31 PM

Whoa! There is a product that's called quill stiletto. I always thought when people talked about using a stiletto, they meant the heel of those shoes. I learned something new.

CarrieAnne 05-14-2010 04:14 AM

Good Luck! I'd love to see a picture, too!

karendenice 05-14-2010 05:15 AM

I thank you'all for your support and suggestions. I am going to try to get to the store sometime this weekend and hope to be able to start on it right away. I will also try to get my daughter to help me to see if I can get or borrow the right tools to take pictures and post them as soon as I can.

jacee kay 05-14-2010 02:41 PM

I must have been dreaming or drinking when I answered this.
I thought I had read that a Grandma needed J.D. fabric scraps to make GS a quilt. Sorry about this.

You can even use a toothpick to "poke" the wonder under, under. I use small pieces of heat n bond and I've had to repair a time of two.

craftybear 05-16-2010 09:35 AM

let us know if you got it fixed!

karendenice 05-16-2010 10:40 AM

I'll do that. It might take a little while though.Need to wait til I get paid again.
