You do beautiful work. Esp. love the Solstice star! But I do have a weakness for stars--just started an echoing star this morning. It will fill the center of the "Bears" coverlet for my bed. I made one in a class. It went together better than I thought it would. It is a lot of work....but actually not that hard to do if you read the directions carefully. You do have to take the paper off the back and the stitching of the some of the pointed seams can be a bit tricky. When It was done, I sure did not know how to quilt it....so I had Karen McTavish quilt it for me. She did a beautiful job of it and I have gifted it to my nephew as he is planning on hanging it.

I’m working on my 3rd one of Judy Niemeyer patterns. I enjoy her patterns but you would really like to paper piece. They are all paper pieced. I like the clean crisp points you get with paper piecing. Never took one of her classes although I may someday. I do read the pattern until I understand what is says to do. Yes, I may read the same sentence over and over. I don’t cut the pattern pieces out like she says to do. Instead, I cut strips wide enough and long enough to cover the pattern. So strip piecing. I’m not in any great hurry. Lol!! But take my time until I’m happy with it. Definitely not for someone who needs it done quick. Also, she is available for a phone call to clarify anything. I talked to her earlier this year. And she will send you new papers if you need them, for mistakes. You can see my quilts if you click on my avatar which will bring you to my page. This is just how I do it. Everyone does it their own way. Good luck. I can’t wait to start another one.

If you go to the QuiltWorx site there is a link to her Facebook page. I believe there are photos of completed projects from her retreats/classes. I was surprised she didn't have a "Success Stories" segment in her Newsletter. Seems like it would be a great marketing technique for sales.

I have a love/hate relationship with paper piecing. I love how it looks when it's done, but I find it tedious.

If you love the pattern, just go for it!

I would definitely get comfortable with paper piecing before tackling a JM pattern. There are a lot of them that are only available for purchase once you've enrolled in a class with a JM-certified teacher, because so many people struggle with them. I have a very experienced friend who has advanced skills in all areas of quilting, and she struggled with the Vintage Rose pattern for quite some time. I recommend starting with a small project, such as a table-runner, to familiarize yourself with Judy's technique.

I took a Judy Niemeyer class. It was paperpiecing the most tedious way ever. If you have serious OCD then it will be fun for you. I did one section her way and got home and did the rest the regular paper pieced way in a fourth of the time. My finished quilt looked exactly like the one made her way. I will never make another of her patterns using her method. The class and kit cost way too much and I'm not one to complain about a class cost as I usually learn something new. That class I learned nothing but how to make quilting miserable. Buy the pattern and do it the regular way on your own and save some misery. LOL

I'd love to hear more about how Judy Niemeyer's paper piecing method differs from "regular" paper piecing. (I've done some regular paper piecing (sewing through the paper), and I've done some of the so-called "paperless paper piecing" (where you use freezer paper and fold back the paper along the sewing line and then sew *right next* to the fold). The latter was really nice in that the paper comes off the fabric easily and you don't have to pick bits of paper out of seams.)
