I got mine with an online fabric order I made recently. My nearest JoAnn's is almost 100 miles away. The card is good online too, but it's good only through 8/31/10.

catrancher 08-09-2010 08:46 AM

You can use your VIP card in addition to your other coupons. You get another 10% off the top.

ccline1232010 08-09-2010 08:58 AM

I had to show that I was a member of a Guild to get mine.

ccline1232010 08-09-2010 09:04 AM

Now that you are a member, do you feel that it was a great idea? I have been tossing the thought around for a couple of months now. Please let me know.

Not in Fort Wayne, IN....can only be used if regular or sale priced items, not with coupons.

Maybe its my Saturday morning brain. Also, is anyone a member of QCA or QNN? What do you think of them? Most of it comes thru QNN, the video's, etc. I like Quilt Out Loud.

I get the JoAnns discount card through my membership with AQS.

Oh! I agree!! I love that magazine. I do like watching the online shows too.

Nancy11442 08-09-2010 10:27 AM

I didn't get the VIP card yet. Am thinking about it but the thing with Jo-Anns is that every time I want to use my coupon...they have it on sale!! I don't shop there alot bec that's always the way it is. My Jo-Anns has books but they are ALWAYS a mess and thrown around so you can't find anything at all. Not sure but I think I just talked myself out of getting the VIP card!!

MillieH 08-09-2010 10:33 AM

Books in a mess: Our Hancocks is like that, too. Seems no one ever bothers to try to straighten them up and customers never put them back in the right section. I was looking for something the other day and thought they need to run a special sale on books just to get some of them sold so they can reorganize what's left.

FroggyinTexas 08-09-2010 10:37 AM

Getting the VIP card costs you nothing at all. You don't have to use it.

Obviously, if you have a 40 percent coupon it would be more sensible to use the coupon. Equally obviously, if you don't have a 40 percent coupon, getting at least 10 percent is something instead of nothing. And, since the 40 percent coupons are only good on one item, if you are going to buy several other things, the 10 percent is good on those.

Roberta 08-09-2010 11:05 AM

Money is tight here as well but if you renew early you can get the membership for $19.95. I just did it by calling their customer service number.

If you want to do it online you put in the code PH-1KADC for the discount. A nice little savings.

CLMQuilter 08-09-2010 11:57 AM

I have a VIP Card from my Quilt Guild. The JoAnns here has you show a photo ID to be sure you are the person that the card was issued too. Too many people were giving there cards out to other people to use that did not have one.

Covered in Threads 08-09-2010 02:03 PM

I've had a VIP card for years now. And of course the general rule is that you get an additional 10% off your entire purchase but it will not always apply to items that you use your 40% coupons on. But I obtained my VIP card from JoAnn's when I registered my state/city licensed business with them for tax exemption. It does sweeten the pot a bit and makes the possibility of earning a profit possible. There are two cards I know that is offered by JoAnn's - one for teachers, so anyone that teaches, even those that home school can ask for one - the manager will state what is needed to get one - I recommend you call ahead and get a name. The other is for licenses businesses and I did have to give them a copy of my state license to receive it. But once it is on file, you get it right then to use on your purchase and you are on file for about 1 year and I beleive that is from August 1st through July 31st. I applied for mine in Arizona and have had no probelm using it in all the neighboring states, so far.
Ask for one, all they can do is say no or tell you what is needed to file for one.

irma tapia 08-09-2010 03:14 PM

That's a great question....I do the same thing here in Dallas

SewKrazy1 08-09-2010 03:44 PM

I have been getting the 10% discount cards for years. When you enroll in AQS or the national quilt guild (I can't think of the name) they send you the card. JoAnne doesn't give out discounts to guild members. You need the little green paper 10% off card. I believe it is well worth joining the guild as I am always spending at JoAnn's. Also even if you use the 40 or 50% off coupon, you still get the 10% off, as long as the JoAnn's store coupon is not a percentage off the total.

I received my 10% VIP card for Jo-Anns when I paid for my membership to the QCA. I believe it was part of that package. I use it all the time! Every little bit helps....

arpdesigns28 08-09-2010 07:17 PM

Welp, I just got the e-mail. And, after the money I've spent with them, I better get one! ;0)

LadyCougar 08-09-2010 08:41 PM

I received my VIP card through the Sewing Guild and the Quilter's Club of America. At my Joann's I can use the 10% card and all coupons - so sometimes it's quite a savings.

bjdemir 08-09-2010 08:45 PM

I got mine from Quilters Club of America. It has to be renewed every year. I believe they are good through August 31 of each year. Here in Oregon, it cannot be used with coupons, but on everything else, including sale items.

This has nothing to do with VIP cards but JoAnn Fabrics makes soo mad. I went in to buy batting as it was half price (warm & natural) I wanted 12 yards. The roll she had only had six. I said, there is a box there that isn't opened. She asked ME if it was the same stuff. I didn't know but go look!!! She did brought the box up. Made all kinds of comments about me getting soo much. She called for help from a clerk. The big roll knocked down some stuff on the counter which she wasn't happy about. If she was more careful and wasn't so mad because I wanted 12 yards she would have done fine. Then she is saying she (me) will need a semi to take this out, it could have been cut in 6 yard pieces. Well if I wanted two 6 yard pieces I would have asked for that. There were some other comments but I couldn't hear. Anyway I got my bundle from the disgruntled clerk and did not need a semi to get it home. The attitude just FROSTED ME!!. I also bought a couple things at 50% off. You would think they would be happy to have a sale. I don't buy material there but I like the batting sale and accessory sales. I wish I had a store I could go to closer but the next store is 200 miles away. Oh well I just go there when absolutely necessary.

Ripped on Scotch 08-10-2010 09:28 AM

I only had to show my ID to get the card. After that I haven't shown it again. It is up at the end of August, but easy to renew. If you ask at the check out they will sign you up as well.

you think you made them mad. My mom & I asked for the entire bolt & they couldn't tell if it was a new roll or not so they measured it all out. all 40 yards of it... But they were really nice about it by the end we had a method. But $5.99 a yard plus the VIP card it was a good deal. My mom has a Gammill so we just store it on the pole under the table and only have to buy it when it's on sale. it's fantastic

You know Mortinarose, it's not easy to find anywhere lately that offer of quality "customer service" as it should be. With WalMart, it's disappearing clerks, with JoAnn's it's the grumpy clerks, with some Quilt Shops is the don't bother me attitudes.
I personally worked at a JoAnn's for a length of time as an assistant manager and had customers that came in looking for me and called to see if I was working during special sales and this made me feel special. I did go out of my way but found I learned a lot from my customers when they shared their ideas.
But to be honest I had a few really horrible customers come in, one in particular was being rude to me and others because the lines were so long during a special sales day. She actually went so far as to come around the counter to remeasure what she thought I had done incorrectly - 11 yards of fabric (come to find out she would have had an extra 5 inches of fabric with my cut) but when she came around to the back of counter she actually shoved me with her hip causing me to lose my balance. Many in the store were very shocked. The manager came to my rescue and escorted the customer out and asked her not to return. The probelm only got worse. This manager was doing the right thing but was repremanded by Corporate Office after getting a heated phone call from the customer complaining. In so many of these large chain stores, they restrict the number of hours the manager can distribute to the employees causing shortages of clerks during special sales this in returns causes "impatient" customers. It's not easy working on the other side of the counter and I do recall those days and try to find a positive way to make things better for them and me. Though you are a bit miffed with this clerk, I have to wonder what put this grumpy tone on her heart. It just may be time for her to find another job.
And we lost our JoAnn's to a collapsed roof this past winter, have missed it dearly, I've gotten use to ordering my batting on the website when it's on sale and will be at the grand re-opening when they complete the remodeling this November. We all have bad days but on the positive ones we should also see how we can make things better for those serving us. It's not easy to work for minimum wages, especially when you don't know from week to week if you will have 30 hours on the books or only 12. I do know that JoAnn's did that to me quite often when sales were down.

Joyce 08-10-2010 09:59 AM

This really doesn't have anything to do with VIPs at JoAnn's.
I happened to be in Walmarts yesterday with my husband as he shopped.
I walked through the fabric dep't. There were 2 clerks leaning on their elbows on the cutting counter.
I said, " I've been told you 2 are the best clerks in this fabric dep't.
First response, "WHAT?", so I repeated myself.
Boy, you should have seen the look on their faces! I really got their full attention even though I didn't buy anything.

pamesue 08-10-2010 10:18 AM

I think this is the link to the QB card that some have made reference too.

I have a VIP card & it is good for a year & you get your 10% off on practicaly everything!
Just ask the manager for the card they have to sign them. & you can use it at any Joanns. I was a member of QNN & no one around here acepted them! Joanns is not just for Teachers it's for anyone! Enjoy it! You also get a sale paper with extra coupons' & you still use your card!

fancifrock 08-10-2010 01:03 PM

You go to Joann's with your membership card from a quilting guild and ask for a VIP card. It is free but you do have to have proof that you belong to a guild or quilting organization.

AlisaQuilts 08-10-2010 02:05 PM

Charleen DiSante 08-11-2010 09:17 AM

Just a small a correction on this post: You do not get the additional 10% (or any other discount) off once you use a coupon at a Joann's. If you check on the coupons, it says it right on it. I love getting that little extra % off.

At least that is how the teacher cards work.

cherrio 08-12-2010 03:54 AM

the photo ID is becoming a sticking point where someone, or a lot of someones, are allowing everyone she knows, and the lady behind her in line, to use her card instead of everyone having their own card. If the cards are free I don't see why JoAnn's is making this a security issue.

fancifrock 08-12-2010 12:23 PM

They are free to persons belong to quilting guilds etc. Like anything else, people do abuse them. They are not supposed to be shared with friends and family. They are a nice thing that Joann's does for quilters so why abuse it?

Charleen DiSante 08-13-2010 05:06 AM

Dear mortinarose: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, CALL THE COMPANY AND TELL THEM WHAT YOU EXPERIENCED. That could help get some extra help for the people working there. If the company knew what their cutting hours does to the clerks AND the customers, then maybe they would do something differently. So, please tell them what you experienced.

cherrio 08-13-2010 06:23 AM

You can make all the phone calls you want. . . hiring help is the last priority at JoAnn Fabrics. I live in Niles, Ohio and the girls there are, ringing out customers for 10 minutes, cutting material for 20 minutes, putting away bolts, straightening for 20 minutes, helping customers in between all of that. Now that would work if there WERE MORE THAN 2 EMPLOYEES in the store. I don't blame the girls. They bust their butts and it is very obvious to customers that corporate greed needs to take a step back and consider the reason the front door opens every morning; the customer's satisfaction. It is too easy to shop online nowadays for yarn, fabric, thread etc. and I can see complete lines instead of just what 1 store carries

Miss Mona 08-13-2010 06:58 AM

Employee hours are based on sales made on that particular day a year ago. If sales were down so are the hours. It is immaterial if today happens to be a sale day and last year wasn't. Most of the manager of fabric stores (most not all) do their best. These stores are run by office people and numbers on paper. The more customers spend, the more hours the clerks get. Simple economics. More people are shopping on line so now more Fabric Stores are closing.

fancifrock 08-13-2010 07:16 AM

You are absolutely right about what is happening at Joann's. Everything they do is based on what happened a year ago. I wonder if they realize that things were different a year ago. Just look at the prices and people out of work since last year. Really the only way to get results is to dump emails on Joann headquarters. The stores have no choice but to do what they are told. These people don't want to lose their jobs either.

Keep on emailing Joann's to tell them that you are not satisfied with the service you are getting. It seems to be in all the stores.
