Indian Blanket Pattern?

1 Attachment(s)
Husband has asked for an Indian Blanket style quilt. My searches are not turning up any so far. Have you ever seen any quilt pattern that looks similar to this?

TinkerQuilts 11-18-2012 06:04 AM

I just finished a log cabin quilt in the "Navajo" pattern - it's close but not exactly like your picture.

QuiltE 11-18-2012 06:07 AM

Yes!
I'm pretty sure there are block patterns in QuiltersCache that would work.
I have a daily calendar of quilt blocks ... and there's some that would work too.
I'll go thru it and try to get you some block names.

And too, you could draw out your block on graph paper, based on that photo.
Looks pretty much like an Irish Chain block gone diamond!

http://jmichellewatts.com/Southweste..._Patterns.html ....don't know how to make this an actual link on here but you can cut and paste and get the same effect. The magic was using the the word "southwest" along with any other quilt related word. Hope this gets you started on the way to what you want.

SHELTIE'SMAMA 11-18-2012 07:04 AM

Ha! who'd of thunk it would do itself into a link when I hit post. Seven a.m. and I've already got my learn something new covered before I hit the bottom of the first cup of coffee.

My favorite book Tradition With A Twist has several that could be made to look Native American by using your choice of fabric. I have made several from this book including a Zuni. Im sure Amazon has the book. By the way, the instructions are perfect. The author now 93 yro introduced strip piecing years ago. She was honored in houston a few years back as a pioneer in the quilting resurgence.

thimblebug6000 11-18-2012 08:22 AM

This site has patterns & kits http://www.swdecoratives.com/proddetail.php?prod=112701

nativetexan 11-18-2012 08:50 AM

yep, i've used SWdecoratives.com too.

IrishNY 11-18-2012 08:57 AM

It looks like a form of a Bargello pattern. Maybe you could use that to design your own.

Peckish 11-18-2012 09:44 AM

Google "Seminole quilt" and you might find something you like. Here's a start:

http://www.hgtv.com/crafting/simply-seminole/index.html
There have been a couple of books written about Seminole piecing, also. Can't remember the names, but you could try Amazon.

ckcowl 11-18-2012 11:03 AM

there are a couple books of Seminole quilt patterns- the one i have is:
Simply Seminole by Dorothy Hanisko...techniques & designs in quilt making- Easy strip piecing, Quick cutting, Stunning designs (that's what is written on the front cover)
the book has 36 Seminole band designs & 13 colorful quilts.

Too funny! Now you can finish that coffee in peace and take off the rest of the day. :o
Great job finding all those patterns for me. Never thought of adding Southwest to my search.

Weezy Rider 11-18-2012 03:38 PM

Cozy Quilt Designs has one called Sky Lantern. I had a wall hanging pattern from years ago with a Southwestern name, but the same design.

AlienQuilter 11-18-2012 04:59 PM

Go to Quilt in a Day and look at Dream Catcher. It would make a great center medallion and you could use Seminole borders around it.

http://www.quiltinaday.com/freepattern/

And it's a free pattern.

ube quilting 11-18-2012 06:02 PM

Here is one I just finished. Look at the pattern not the material. Mine is just a scrappy. If you did this with SW colors it would be fab.

I totally agree with this - the book has several patterns that look like Native rugs.

karenpatrick 11-19-2012 05:48 AM

Do a search for Seminole-type quilt patterns. I'm sure you'll find something to suit you.

4EVERquilt 11-19-2012 06:06 AM

I'm still in the process of making a trip around the world with southwest/native american type fabrics, another pattern you could use is the one they call the star, lone star or bethlehem star using again southwest/native american fabrics.

Thanks for posting this link SHELTIE'SMAMA. She has a free block pattern you can download to try out her patterns. I saw a couple of patterns I'd love to have. Maybe I'll give myself an early Christmas present. LOL.

Very pretty block! Thanks for the link AlienQuilter.

Thanks for all the great links!!!!!!!!!!! You ladies are great!!!!!!!!!!!

collady 11-19-2012 07:20 AM

I did one for a friend. I just used graph paper and charted out the center of the blanket then used full strips for the rest of the quilt. It turned out well and wasn't as hard as it looked when finished.

katieboo 11-19-2012 08:03 AM

I have two patterns that I printed, "Navajo Sunset" and "Navajo Winter". They are Jinny Beyer patterns that were free. I can't remember how I found them but if you google either name, they would probably come up.

hevemi 11-19-2012 08:25 AM

Maybe you could build your colors around this pattern http://www.quilterscache.com/S/Squas...ock_Page2.html

MaggieLou 11-19-2012 09:45 AM

You could try Diane's Native AMerican Star Quilts too. http://www.nativeamericanstarquilts.net/index.htm

This is what I was going to suggest as well. Seminole quilts are a lot of woke but they are so worth the effort.

I was thinking of J Michelle Watts, also. She spoke to our Quilt Guilt in Temple, TX last yr. Wonderful patterns and fabric. Not like any others I have seen.

I have a pattern named Southwest Magic / Sun Streak. I bought it years ago and never used. I will be happy to mail it to you. [email protected]

Hylarie 11-19-2012 04:21 PM

There are quite a few possibilities on quilterscache.com. Some that looked similar were Squash Blossom, Delectable Mountains Variation, Zig Zag, and Navajo.

caspharm 11-19-2012 07:23 PM

There are some great suggestions here.

Congrats, Sheltie'sMama - hope it's contagious!

Here is an easy one by Windham Fabrics, it's actually on my bucket list to do.

I recently purchased her book "Quilts of the Southwest" (referred to on her site as being out of print). I found a good used copy on Amazon. If you think you might do more than one Southwest themed quilt, this book is a good investment since it has many of her patterns in it. Beautiful designs...................

You are right...that would do the trick in SW colors. Here is a similar block that someone suggested:
